First time out with my Explorer II and X-1 probe

Pete in MI

New member
Casey was home this weekend and I was extended the opportunity to get out detecting. I took the Explorer II up to the ghost town. Did a little surveying of damage to the cemetary before going detecting. (I don't detect in cemetaries). Vandals keep ripping the place up. Here is a picture of the gates to the cemetary.

I couldn't get close to the place because the roads were soft and filled with water in places...the above shot was a telephoto shot from my camera from across the railroad tracks and on the opposite road.

Well guess I did OK for my very first time out using an Explorer. Some of what is in the pic is eyeball finds, some found with the detector...mostly junk. There is a part from a harmonica on the right side and under the curved iron whatchamacallit in the center is a 1967 Dime...the only coin found:

Well sure is a long way from it paying for itself at this rate. Sure is a lot of trash for a 1800s ghost town.

I had a real good time though until it was time to go. My cellphone was not on my belt. Checked inside the van and not there anywhere. Spent probably another hour back tracking or attempting to backtrack to find the cellphone. Finally gave up figuring I'd have to borrow someone else's cellphone, go back there, spend a day calling my cell phone and listening to see if I can hear it ringing in the woods.

As I approached the van I saw something familiar on top of the van...the cellphone. Guess I took it off the belt and laid it on the roof and forgot it. Not the first time either for phone and even lost a set of headphones I laid on the roof one time. As I pulled out of the school driveway the headphones rolled off into the street. As I looked back in the rear view mirror I saw the headphones and was going to go back - well was being the operative word as before I could brake some other motorist ran the headphones over.

One would think I'd learn to not put things on top of the van.

Oh well great time anyway...my arm sure hurts from all the swinging. Guess I need more swinging practice.

But if a Ghost Town actually was located at that site, then you will find old Coins sooner or later along with a lot of Iron and other Relics from long ago. Good Luck and HH at your site.
