First time out with the XL Pro.

Went to a local park that gets pounded for about an hour.
This machine loves nickels and dimes I found 7 dimes, 6 nickels and 2 cents.
In rich moist dirt the depth gauge is rate on. However in dry sandy soil when the coin is 1" deep the meter reads 2" - 3" is this normal?
When the needle points to the c in nickel its a nickel if its higher or lower its a pull tab or can slaw.
I am starting to like this detector I found more in the last 15 minuets than the first 45.
But I still have a lot to learn.
Does anyone have any tips to speed up the learning process?
Thanks
Jim

Howdy Jim

You can do some research on this forum, it has 20 pages of posts dating back to 2005 and the XL PRO is mentioned alot. There is one poster that is a true XL PRO that goes by the name Monte. You will see his posts about the XL PRO scattered through this forum. He presently has 93 pages of posts if you click on his name......and if you go back 93 pages and work forward you will find a wealth of knowledge about your XL PRO. Some of the more interesting things he talks about are signal balance and setting ground balance to optimum. Buy the way I have owned this most excellent detector for three years now and really like it.

Watch the needle when you sweep the coil. If it twitches ever so slightly to the left, it's most likely trash. If its rock steady in your sweep, it's most likely a coin. Research the XL Pro as Randy said but, also search posts by MONTE. This guy is the GURU!!! A wealth of knowledge.

Good Luck,

Monte fiddles with a lot of detectors. (If he locks in on one it is for good reason.) The XL Pro is deserving of all it's reputation and is THE "Top Dog" analog because of it, and ..........never heard so many complaints about a detector being discontinued as with that one! Modern ergonomics and weight/Analog strengths in signal response...................you found treasure before you even turned it on. Bet White's would still be making it if affordable parts were out there! Enjoy!

It's 4:34 am and I just finished answering a PM as well as an E-mail dealing with the XL Pro. It was originally called the 6000 Pro XL but was unchanged except for the name to XL Pro. Somehow, in a moment of weakness, I sold a fellow my last XL Pro simply because he seriously offered me a very decent amount and I figured I'd pick up another in short order. Well, I haven't but am on the search, but being a rather picky guy I like all of my detector to be, and to be kept, new or as close to it as possible. Thus, I am in search of a pristine, perfect-working XL Pro.

As others have mentioned, I am a fan of this model, but I am a real fan because I rely on two coils. You didn't mention which coil you were using but i like the stock 950 coil for open-area searches where the target-count is sparse. Plowed fields looking for old building or activity remains, or large, well-hunted grassy parks and such were there are not a lot of targets (shallower) so I can get a bit of depth of the deeper, possibly older coins. I only use the 950 coil about 5% to maybe 10% of the time. Most of my hunting with virtually any White's model (XLT, XL Pro, modified IDX Pro, MXT, M6) is done with one of White's 6

Thanks everyone.
Monte it looks like it was never used but I am loving it to much to let it go.
After reading past post I have a 5.3 coil coming for it can't wait to try it out there is so much trash were I hunt.
Monte I have acquired a IDX were would it be better than the XL Pro?
Thanks for the ground balance tip I am starting to find wheats silver can't be far behind.
I like the tid better than the one on my F75 I don't dig crown caps or screw caps with the XL Pro.
