First time out...

Bought my first ever metal detector - a gently used X-Terra 70 - a couple weeks ago. Finally had a free day to try it out on Delaware's ocean beaches last weekend. Took a bit of adjusting to get it fitted and comfortable, and a bit of trial and error to figure out sensitivity and ground balance, but the multiple viewings of the instruction videos did what they were supposed to do.

First stop was the beach at Cape Henlopen State Park....took a while but I finally passed over my first "real" target. A couple scoops and I had my first ever coin - a couple year old penny. Hey, if you start at the very bottom, the only direction is up. :) A little further up the beach and I was digging my second coin. Yep, another penny.

Left the Cape and headed a few miles south to the Delaware Seashore State Park beach at Tower Road. Wasn't real sure where to look, but the tide was just about all the way out so I looked along the edge of what would have been a submerged slough at high tide. The first coin on this beach was a clad quarter - ironically, a Delaware state quarter with Caesar Rodney on the reverse. Found three more clad quarters and a chunk of what looked like melted blob of metal. Silvery in color, relatively light weight, about 1 1/2 inches in overall length. No idea what it is, but it went into the baggie with my coins.

While none of the coins were valuable, they made my first day of metal detecting a success. One question...what should I use to get the white crust off of the pennies and the dull patina off of the quarters? Or, am I supposed to leave them that way?

Thanks!

Congratulations on your first detector and your coins. I have a x-terra 70 also and really like it. In know time you will be finding alot of coins.

Just a reminder Bob, send me a pm when you get out next time. Love to meet up and do some beach hunting. Joe

Welcome...you picked a great detector to start with. Keep swinging and HH TomB.

Thanks all for the encouragement....Will definately take you up on the invite to get together for some hunting Joe.

Looking forward to it Bob. Gets boring going by myself all the time. Got some good land sites lined up to.

A rotary or vibrating tumbler does a pretty good job on cleaning pennies and clad. I use dish detergent and aquarium gravel for the pennies and a small amt. of salt mixed with warm vinegar in aquarium gravel for clad coins. There are many mediums you can use in place of the aquarium gravel and the same for solutions. Experiment to to see what works best for you. If your not going to be cleaning many coins and don't want to buy a tumbler yet, you can put the salt and vinegar solution in a 1 qt. pot, heat it up and add the coins (keeping the pennies separate from the clad), stirring them around and as they come clean, dip them out one by one. Then rub them on a sponge/brillo pad, if needed to finish cleaning them. Needless to say a tumbler is the only way to go if your going to be cleaning a lot of coins... Do not clean any old or silver coins!

Wtg on the new detector! Before long you will be pulling all kinds of coins and relics out of the ground. Its my 3rd year with my 70 and I have done really well with it. Upgrading in a week to the Etrac. You have a good detector and if you learn to listen to it it will not steer you wrong. It has been a while since I have been on this forum but am back now. If you have any questions about relic or coin hunting, shoot me a pm. GH
