my first time in the water was a bit disapionting. one spoon and a bunch of rusty wire.set up ground balance acording to manual was detecting in (auto tune)don't know if i never went over anything or was set up wrong. got home and tried test on ground. everything from penny to gold ring. seemed like 2 on discriminate worked best. will try that next time in water.what settings do you guys use. i hunt in fresh water. is there anything else i should be doing. also is it common for the pinpionter to pinpiont a large area the loudest sound takes up a large area i can't seem to get right over the spot . thanks

On the sandy beach where I'm looking for modern coinage/jewelry (freshwater) I keep the volume at or above 5, Sense at 6, GB near the midpoint and disc at 1. Doing river hunting I am also looking for relics and there is more old iron trash, but I keep the disc at 0 going between Auto and disc and carry lots of iron out and pile it up. I've dug everything from railroad wreckage to sump pumps. Better add I've found some coinage too!
Found barrel hoops and sewer cap rings before that you could trace using pinpoint and of course pinpoint would not actually "center" in the middle of the target area. 55 gal. drums with the top rotted off will also do this under some conditions. Good luck digging them out of the packed stone/mud/sand or medium of the situation! I've done it a couple times and it took a lot of R & R afterward.

Rel those areas with large loud sounds may be large objects buried. If not many detune the target by moving the coil to the right of approx. location, tap the pinpoint button several times and go over the target with the button depressed. Should(detune) shrink the target for easier pinpointing. I personally would use disc. and accept all except iron and remember the foil is the hot spot for gold jewelry. I know one swimming hole I detected the left side was fine, but the right side had many large targets buried and its possible this is your problem. As far as the fellow putting the ground balance in a certain spot, you are defeating the ground balance procedure and may be losing depth and stability. They explain the procedure in two ways and do use one to properly ground balance.Hunting in the water takes time to learn as the water seems to accelerate the units abilities and finding the proper spot to dig while looking thru refraction of the water takes time to learn..

I work saltwater beaches in autotune; for a wider scan?. Believe it or not, I keep the volume at 10 and wear earplugs so I don't go deaf (a tip from the Golden Olde site I tried) The faint tones are really boosted at that point and I can still hear them with the earplugs in while the REALLY loud tones are lessened. I've dug up some things I'm sure I would have missed because I don't think I would have heard them... but that's me.
I adjust the sensitivity to where I can bearly hear a hum. I don't really have a problem with mineralization so ground balancing is not a problem for me.
When I hit a target in autotune, I simply flip the disc knob to "0" to ID it. I very rarely use the pinpoint as I find it pretty easy to target in autotune. I'll "X" out the target, walk around it, or raise the coil a little to narrow down the area.
If you're having a problem with pinpointing, definitely move off the target, repress the button and go back over the target area. It works.
Hey, if you have doubts about how your machine is set up / reading, just bury some coins at varying depths. Kinda like a test garden only in the field... Just make sure the area is "clean" first

why wouldn't you just hunt in 0 disc. to begin with. you're going to dig everything but irom anyway on the beach.

Hey Chuck, that does depend on the beach to be sure. CZ-20 has a loud response in those headphones to all targets. So fewer iron beeps in iron-rich hunt sites can be desirable. That's one reason to keep the disc above iron. Yeah you might miss a keychain or two but hey, the head won't be buzzing after an hour or so.
Had my CZ20 out in the rain today at the curb, sidewalk reconstruction site. Just set the GB at the factory preset and run sense at about 5. disc at 2. Can't GB in the nail-rich environement and working the ditch where the curb has been removed it's a little tight next to the street full of rebar. Wouldn't want it at 0 disc there, either.

I realize that I can keep the Disc at "0" and save the trouble of switching back and forth, however I find that in the Disc mode, I can't keep the sensitivity as low with out getting a lot of false (loud) beeps. In addition, the Autotune is supposed to be a little wider (deeper?) sweep. Lastly, I just plain prefer the autotune to the Discmode; just personal preference. When I'm in trashier areas in the drier sand, I discriminate depending on the amount / type of trash in the area. Like I said, just personal preference that seems to be working for me.
