First Trip out with new F4

I finally had an opportunity to take my Fisher F4 out this afternoon. There's a newer middle school around the corner from my house with grassy fields, with tot lots with wood chips and tot lots with sand. Although there's no chance of old coins, it's a good producer of modern clad and makes a good test bed to learn the ropes on a new machine.

I used the DD coil (first time I've used one) and it's a coin rake!! I was able to run max sensitivity, and it had good depth, and very accurate target ID's. After a few zinc pennies locked on (the TID was spot on), I quit digging them. I dug all foil and pull tabs (which wasn't much), just in case, and although no bling appeared today I was surprised to get a fragment of aluminum about 7" deep which was about the size of say half a standard sized wooden match, but as thin as an aluminum can. I thought that was impressive. After about an hour and a half of hunting (and a large audience of kids now following me around...why does that happen  I ended up with four quarters (and one screw cap that hit like a quarter), seven dimes, several nickels and pennies for a total of about $2 in modern coins.

My biggest treasures of the day - I got really excited when I dug the first one, it was a half dollar sized golden colored LASER TAG token good for one free game of Laser Tag :wiggle: I ended up with two of those gems. Now if I can figure out where this place is, I can get my laser tag on :starwars:

Pinpointing was pretty easy, although I was tricked a few times  The F4 i's ultra light, even with the big 11" DD coil. I also have the 10" concentric coil, so that will be the next test, maybe at the beach this weekend if the weathers nice. Overall, at least thus far, I'm impressed with the F4 (I wonder what the F5 will bring to the table:confused:).

I'm kinda wondering about the F5 myself, I've got the F75 and like it so well I am pretty seriously thinking about making the F5 my backup and selling my current backups. Glad you are enjoying your F4. The whole F series seems to be pretty darn impressive. HH jim tn

Having 12 detectors (4 being Fisher) I had traded for an F4 about two months ago. I had never really hunted with it. Took it out the day before yesterday and I was very impressed. I am wanting to take time to try it out again to see if I am right about it......Jack

I think I like my F4 but I'm having trouble pipointing the double D. it's my first time with a DD coil. And my 8" coil seems to be off by about an inch when pinpointing.

I'm still more confident with my XLT, but I love the weight of the F4

Pulltab there's two ways you can PP with the DD coil. The easiest way I found is to X your target for a rough idea of the center, then move the coil fore and aft until the tip of the coil hits the target and the F4 starts to sound off (and the TID will probably be wrong at this point, because it's just barely detecting the target), keep doing this while doing a 360 around the target and you'll narrow it down to the center (you do not need to use the pinpoint function on the F4 for this method).

According to the manual you can use the PP function and the target is in the center of the DD coil, which I didn't have great luck with, but found the other method to be so easy and worked well enough I didn't practice the F4 electronic PP further, as I was trying to learn it's other characteristics. I'll definitely practice with it more, as the F4 PP will indicate depth and such on the LCD. There's a little dot on the top center of the coil, I don't know if that's supposed to be the actual center/PP target, or if it's just a mold mark from the manufacturing of the coil materials.

My Coinstrike is definitely a lot easier to PP with, it's pretty accurate on a concentric coil. The elliptical coil is a different story though.
