First trip out with the Omega

UPS delivered it today so I thought I would take it out for a few hours after work. I had already read the manual and watched the video from Andy before it got here so I was familiar with its operation. Went to a local park and started by a shelter house. I knew it would be real trashy but I wanted to give it a try. Started with a discrimination setting of 16 but had to switch to where just coins were notched in. Too much trash. It wasn't long before a couple cars pulled up and people started setting up for a birthday party so I went and found a quieter spot.

I ground balanced the detector and the whole time I hunted I had no bars showing on the Fe graph. I was able to turn the sensitivity up to 90 and still have no interference or falsing. I found the usual clad and one buffalo nickel that was 4-5 inch range. The three nickels that I did find hit at 56-57 and did not go higher. I dug a lot of signals that hit 56-57 and then jumped to 58 or 59. Everytime they were trash. Seems like it really locks on to nickels even the deeper ones.

My first impression is that I like it. I got it to mainly hunt at trashy parks and schools. I think it will work just fine for that. Do I think it will consistently hit dimes or pennies at 7 inches. No, not from what I observed today. The weakest sounding targets I dug were around 6 inches deep. I have the Explorer and 3D that I can use when I want to go after the deep ones.

I dug several screw caps that rang up in the zinc range but I think just about every detector gets fooled by some of them. The one thing I did notice was that the target ID numbers seemed pretty stable. I will have to take it out some more and get to learn it better.

Nice first outing...Love the Buffalo. Bill, without ever swinging an Omega myself, I still think you might be pleasantly surprised at its depth, long term. Good luck with the Omega and HH jim tn

Thanks. I will give it another good workout this weekend and give an update. I think it will work out fine....

I will be watching for your update Bill. It looks like you already have 2 fine detectors to compare too. I am just learning my Omega and read every Omega thread seeing what others are doing with theirs.

I took it out again today to another park. This park had some areas that were real trashy and some areas that werent too bad. I detected by both areas and got the usual clad coins. Used the notch mode in the real trashy areas. I could run the sens as high as i wanted without any falsing. The detecor really seems to lock on dimes with an accurate target ID. Found some at around 4 inches with accurate id. Dug a key at around 7 inches, dug a few tabs in the six inch range. Dug a lot of nickel signals that read 56-57, got a lot of trash. In fact never even found a nickel. I am beginning to think that if the target ID goes over 56 most of the time it is not a nickel. Dont know about the deep nickels yet. I am sure it would probably jump around a little.

Pinointing is easy and the depth readout while pinpointing is pretty accurate on coin sized targets. Seems like the Omega does not have the problem of tipping over all the time like some of the other fishers.
