Hi Ron,
I wish the F22 was available when I first started out. I think it would be a great first detector. It has a feature on it (the user assignable audio tones) that I have had to pay a thousand dollars to get in the past. Now you can get it for a couple of hundred. If you live in an area with good soil conditions the F22 will be a greatt first unit. If you live in an area with more mineralized soil conditions you would want to jump up to the F44 for the ground cancellation feature.

It's a Fisher so I assume it's pretty good as most of them are.
The F44 seems to be the more popular model of the new entry level Fishers but with a few more features which cost more.
I wish I can tell you about this one but I never held one, it is a bit more modern and going to take the place of the F2...which is still being sold.
I can tell you with about 1000 hours spent with it that F2 has abilities galore, finds everything and is extremely popular so I would expect nothing less of this one.
There are vids out there of people using the F22 and F44 so you might want to go look at those, maybe someone will come along and tell you more about this thing.

I used the F2 for many years and then upgraded to the F70, only because I started gold and meteorite hunting. I still love my F2 and can not get myself to sell it, so I keep it as a backup and loaner. My sister started going out with me to some beaches and she loves using the F2. I think you will find the F22 to be a fantastic first detector.

I never had an F2 but a buddy of mine has one and loves it. He has found many silver coins, relics, jewelry and just about everything else. Maybe you could look for a previously owned model to see if you really enjoy it ? Look in the classifieds section of the findmall forums. They pop up on occasion. The F22 and F44 have been mentioned as successors. I had an F44 and though it allowed me to find great things, I had a love/hate relationship with it since day one and finally sold it. Finding the good stuff is one thing, understanding a detectors language/character is another and both are important if you want to keep at it.

The thing should not give you any problems being water resistant and all, Fishers are light weight but pretty tough and unless you run over it you should be good.
Lots of vids on this one out there, learn the language and behavior and you will find much.
After you get good at that I always believed Fishers have an obvious language and then a more hidden not so obvious language that can tell you more if you are observant.
Plus, they are very fun and way productive.
Have fun, dig, learn it well and that thing should pay for itself soon enough.

I know it might seem obvious but make sure you take your headphones off and put the rubber cap in the headphone connector before using it in the rain. You will have to use the built in speaker but the F44 has so many volume settings that it's never difficult to get the right sound level. I really miss that aspect of the F44. I would hunt in the rain and have all areas to myself. 
I used to put a zip lock sandwich bag on top of the display just to keep the display clean when hunting in uncertain weather.
Mike Hillis has an F44 and he knows a thing or two about the machine especially the preset modes. You should be able to find some important posts if you make a search. Good luck and congrats on your purchase.
