Fisher F5 comparison

Is there any major differences between the F5 and the Minelab X-Terra 305? Just looking on the internet, it seems the F5 has more bells and whistles but having never held either, was looking for some opinions.

I got a F5 on its way.One thing you might look at is where you have to send it if something goes wrong with the detector. Also check the minelab forum here and do a search on all the threads here if you haven't already. And search the net that should tell you..For me the selling point was F5 wasn't all push button, you have a lot of control how you adjusted it with knobs also. And the Bill Ladd video was great on showing its features, that and it shows you info on your changing ground conditions.Thats a real plus for me,i just had to returm a detector because it couldn't handle the ground here. And adjusting the GB on F5 looks like a snap. This will be my first manual ground balance detector for me.

I've owned a bunch of Xterras.

The batteries sometimes loose contact and your machine shuts off or resets when it spins around on your lap when you kneel or squat to retrieve a target.
Sometimes your headphone jack will short out somewhere inside of the unit because of the design.
The Audio sounds like a computer arcade game.
The multitone modes (3 and 4 tone modes) include zinc cents with high coins. Anotherwords the audio for a zincer and a dime sound the same.
The are very sweep speed dependant and tend to false a lot on iron.
The ground balance range isn't very large if you happen to be in high mineralization.
I really tried to like the Xterra series (3 xterra 70s, 2 xterra 50s and 1 xterra 305) but they just didn't do anything for me. I kept thinking maybe I was missing something but in the end they really had nothing to offer.

The F5 multi-tone modes (3 and 4 tone mode) keep zincers out of high coins.
The F5 single and dual tones modes have the VCO audio which is very very handy in certain applications. Especially around large iron.
The F5 gives you more information about the target as compared to the 305.
The F5 is just as sensitive to small targets as the 305 with the HF coil. (no kidding)
The F5 can be ground balanced to the most extreme mineralization with plenty of room left.

Feature to Feature, the F5 is just a better detector in every aspect and you wont go broke buying coils cause with the xterras you'll want several coils for each frequency available.

I took the 305, the F5 and a Golden uMax to a old mine, and the 305 falsed so much over the iron that I put it up. Everything was a high tone. Every high tone, regardless of segment illuminated was a peice of iron. The Golden and F5 ran much better.

Hi Woodchuck,
Yep, ground balancing the F5 is a non-event. You'll pick it up fast.

Nice thread, but, re: - "The F5 multi-tone modes (3 and 4 tone mode) keep zincers out of high coins."

Sorry but I speak English English, not American English - what does this "keep zincers out of high coins" translate as?

What is a 'zincer' ?

Thanks

A "zincer" is a post 1981 penny made out of zinc, a junk metal that gets eaten up by the ground over time.

1981 and before US pennies were copper (technically bronze) and 1983 and after are zinc. 1982 had some of each.

Ah - understand, thank you - so what does "The F5 multi-tone modes (3 and 4 tone mode) keep zincers out of high coins". mean?

Does it mean that in 3 or 4 sound mode these zinc coins (or items made of zinc) do not register in the higher tones produced by the machine when in those tonal modes?

Thanks

That's exactly right.

Apologies, I didn't know that - we don't have any zinc coins over here, but in my area near Bristol we do get small pieces of WWII anti-aircraft shell timer cones and they are made of copper - lovely signal but not desired.
We also get cannon shell cases from the fighters that fought overhead (Battle of Britain and all that).

Thanks.

Wow Nap thats interesting, can you post some pics of those anti aircraft shell timer cones, and cannon shell cases. I keep all old shells and bullets I find,[hunting and target shooting, not wars!] It always turns a few heads when you dig a bullet out of someones front yard,or school playground!!

sorry Rick, they are so common I just throw them away - we had a bit of a hammering back then so they aren't rare. On the next hill to where I have farm permissions there was a fighter airfield (Hurricanes), the remains are still there. Over at Bristol airfield, which was a fighter training airfield during the last war, a German bomber landed one early morning at dawn. They had got lost trying to get home, and come in over the sea and thought they were in France! Everyone hid until the crew had got out of the plane and then went to catch them. The whole crew legged it but were caught and taken to the guard room. The reason they ran was that they had been told that if they were captured they would be tortured and killed - what happened was that they were given cigarettes, hot sweet tea and buttered toast. They were just boys, 19 years old or so. Most likely saved their lives, landing there - no more being shot at for them.

Nice story Nap,sounds like you have a nice place to hunt:beers:
