Go to ballots's post on this page and hit the link then download the F5 bible.
Read it, then go get a refreshing drink...then read it again.

My brother has some settings that work well for him, I figure he will pick up on your thread and post some good settings that you should be able to work with. He doesn't seem to miss a lot, I have hunted behind him with my F75 what a waste of time.

I've got an f5 machine and I love everything about it . The best settings I found are " gain at 70 " "threshold at 0 " "full discrimination " " one tone". The main thing I hunt for is silver coins , so I rarely find any nickels . To ground balance I use the phase lock auto balance method not the manual dial method . Hope this helps you (happy hunting).

Welcome to the forum!

Well, what type of hunting are you planning?
Do you want to find jewelry?
Are you looking for relics?
Beach hunting?
Old deep coin hunting?
Clad stabbing?

A bit more information is needed before a good list of setting can be suggested.

I hunt relics. I mostly hunt in the woods & fields.

Okay, then your going to be using a discrimination pretty low, I'd think no higher than the small common nails in the area.
From there you would want to run the sensitivity as high as you can go and keep the detector stable.
Start off with the threshold near "0"
I believe the tones on the F5 is a default single tone, I would think for relic hunting that would be fine.

Other relic hunters may have some other suggestions too!

Found my F5 best settings numbers.

For coins in trashy locations I have found that for most places I hunt, the best settings for me is:
First, find a piece of ground with no metals and do a ground balance.
Use:
Gain: Cranked ALL the way clockwise(full max)
Thresh: Cranked ALL the way +
Discrim: 0. Just click out of all metal
Tones: D2 (my preference as it makes me look at the numbers but I can tell by the pitch and volume if the target is large, small, deep or shallow, but that is just me)
Notch Fe, Foil, Tab and Zinc (my settings. You may prefer to allow more segments but my parks are super trashy)

Keep in mind that I hunt real trashy areas, mostly parks and some schools and I am 66 and have a bad back so for me I really need to retrieve as many good targets as possible without digging up a thousand pull tabs and pieces of tin foil and can slaw just so I can make my trips enjoyable. I know that I may miss some gold, but I totally accept that.

The above settings may sound crazy and just too simple, but I have worked and worked with so many different settings of the Discrim and Thresh and just can not find any combination of settings that make the F5 better or deeper. I find the F5 runs very quiet with these settings and maybe a frequency setting may need adjustment but not often. I have the 11"DD coil and the NEL Sharpshooter. My soil is moderate and constant with no hot rocks. You F5 gurus out there please give this a try and let me know how or if it works for you. Post here and message me. I am interested in what others find with the above settings.

James, thanks for sharing your experiences and advise on settings. I've had my F5 now for over two years and I'm always looking for something new to try so I'll give those settings a shot and see what happens. My last sample setting was to run in all metal and try to get a little more depth, I've been told all metal is the deepest mode, this didn't work well for me because I depend on the tones(4 tones) and I was constantly having to watch the ID screen for information because in all metal you only have one low tone. I also hunt in a very trashy park area, this might be OK in a cleaner area.

Like REVIER said, I would recommend reading the F5 bible first and then read it again and highlight the info you think is most important. There is a wealth of info on the F5 in there. Most of it has to do with jewelry hunting but you will get a good idea of what the settings do and how to use the controls for your specific hunting purposes (relics).

I would go as far as to say that anybody could find some important insights in there regardless of the detector they use.
