Fisher F5

RLOH

Well-known member
I have been using my Fisher F5 almost exclusively for the last two months and have dug some pretty deep coins in that period. I believe that you have to get your ears and brain programmed to what a deep coin sounds like with any detector. For me, that is a problem because my detecting spots have been hammered by me and many others, so most of the older, deeper coins are long gone. This week was an awakening because I finally got a bunch of deeper coins under my coil and the F5 did not disappoint. Like it's brother the Omega, the F5 does not scream out on a 7 to 9 inch coin, but gives a weak, but distinct high tone tick(I hunt in three tones) that usually repeats from all angles. When something is fresh in your brain, it is easier to get comfortable with the sounds and this last weeks finds really helped me. I did not find anything out of this world, but I did have one "heart stopper" a couple of days ago. I got one of these very faint ticks that had numbers between 85 and 91. It pinpointed very tight like a deep coin and sure enough it was silver. A 1916 mercury dime with very little wear. I was shaking as I turned it over looking for the "D", but not to be. This is my 4th plain 16 along with one "S". I also have found a dozen 8 to 9 inch deep wheats and two silver roosies. I will pass along my settings as I run my F5 on thie edge of being stable. Sens 85, disc 15, no notches, three tones, and what I find to be very important for getting the most depth out of this detector, the threshold at 0. With these settings, the detector will chatter when you stop swinging it or set it down to dig. You will hear some noise while swinging, but you can pick out the tones if you concentrate. It might not be for everyone, but it will get you to the 8 inch plus depth level. This detector is one of the best coin detectors I have ever used and I have used just about all of them out there.

RLOH, I couldn't agree with you more. That f5 is one sweet machine, I've had mine for over two years and I'm still learning something new all the time I use that 11"DD coil. I love those faint steady #s that read over 4 inches deep.

Nothing better than clicking with your machine.
Many use certain units and have fun and find stuff.
I believe all detectors have a normal language but also a hidden, deeper language that can be learned from other indicators...sound, number and behavior patterns that aren't so in your face and obvious but there never the less for those that spend the time and effort to look for and understated them.
For the ones that do this hobby can be even more fun and rewarding.
Looks like you have done exactly that.

This is most excellent to read, as I just picked up a spanking new F5, myself. I can't wait to hit the dirt with it and I've read the bible and seen ALL the videos. I feel I won't have too bad a learning curve, as I'm coming off an F2 I hunted with for six years.

Good read. Thanks for the post.

Love the F5 too but have had a lot of problems with it over the five year that i have owned it, purchased it new and have had it in to Fisher twice. Both times they repaired it and it worked great for a year or so then the same thing happens, it won't settle down, numbers jump all over the place and i have to beck it way off the settle it down,-6 will start to smooth out, its not interference i have tried to use it in several different parks and ocean beaches, and still the same thing.I have three different coil and they all do the same thing. When it starts this problem it doesn't stop until i send it in. This will be the third time and its out of warranty, not sure if i want to spend the money to have it repaired.

Skwerly, you will love the F5, it is a good deep silver machine, the one I had really liked the 11" DD coil.

Do the tones stay true or do they go crazy also ? When Fisher repairs it they don't mention what it is/ how they fixed it ?

Did you ever make an online search to see if others had that problem ? It's the first time I hear about it and I've made a lot of research before getting my F5.

Not sure what was done each time but when returned it worked great for a year or more. The tones go crazy as the numbers jump around. I have searched but not any info as for others having the same problem. The first time i sent it in they replaced the push in connector to the screw on connector and changed the coil or replaced it. It just seems like something is interfering with the signal from the coil to the control box. I have changed coils, new batteries, different batteries and made sure connections are tight but as soon as you turn it on it jump at all numbers as fast as it can.

I'm surprised they just didn't change the whole control box the second time around. Seems like a lemon to me. It can happen with everything. You were the unlucky one I guess.

Try contacting Fisher again. If it's always the same problem there should be a guarantee on the repair that doesn't work. Personally I only have positive things to say about their customer service.

I will give them a call because it is the same problem each time, seems to work good for a while then back to the same problem.

I've been out with mine a few times now -- big difference to the F2, yet not worlds away. The thing seems to read much more accurately and I know it's deeper, for one, and for two, I love that I can frequency shift, ground balance, and that threshold knob is one of my best friends. I like a quiet ride, and it's easy to accomplish while still finding good targets.

Haven't tried the DD yet; may have to.

Digger, I have to ask. Are you ground balancing the unit in CLEAN soil with the pumping action as described on a lot of fisher posts? I had the same problem at first, then I found out that when they recommend clean soil, they mean ground with NO unwanted sounds at all coming from the F5. Sometimes it's hard for me to find that clean spot when there is pop cans, tabs and other trash in the ground. But when I do, my F5 preforms flawlessly.

I made a call to Fisher and Russ called me back, we talked about the problem and he sent me shipping to send it back, Russ and Felix were great, fixed the problem and sent it back, it is working great like new, can't beat the service and the help of these two gentlemen .
