Fisher F70 settings.

Knaf, I am on your side on this one -- the halo effect -- sorry azsh07 but you cannot believe everything you read. I will tell you my experience in support of the halo effect -- Oh, azsh07, you and mudpuppy have been of the greatest help. Okay, the halo effect prove itself to me, but not on just pennies, quarters too. When I was using my F2, before I got my new F70, I would dig a coin, clad, in moist ground, nice dark park soil and after retrieving the coin I would swing the coil over the site again, just in case, and many times i would get a reading like there was another coin -- It was good for only three or four passes and would disappear. I would get excited, then I figured it out. Funny, how the signal from the coin seemed to be left behind, like a ghost only to disappear. This happened many times. Since I have been using my new F70 I have not noticed this ghosting -- hey, I think I like that term better than "halo", yeah, ghosting because one minute it there and the next it disappears. So, haloing, when the coin is still in the ground, ghosting when it is removed -- love it

Great vid azsh07. I have not used my F70 yet but you have just given me a great lesson. thanks.

azsh07, you are almost as funny as mudpuppy -- the theology of metal detecting, that would be TMD -- we are "resurrecting" the coin and other things given up for dead. Maybe we could compile a Ten Commandments of proper MDing ? :clapping:

Update: Well, I sent the F70 in to have the tech look at it and they replaced the coil and sent it back. That was 5 months ago and I have been working this machine at least once a week. I have found 6 rings, on gold with ruby set surrounded by diamond (small diamond), the other rings are silver, one with a 1.5 ct stone mount the other are like the Celtic friendship rings that have become popular with people living together as opposed to getting married. If these people would get married then we would all find more gold. I have found 8 other rings but of little or no value, made of various metals, even aluminum kid rings. I found a silver locket too. $250 in quarters -- I Have not yet rolled and counted the dimes or pennies yet. One thing this machine does, it finds the nickels that are missed by other detectors. Went out this morning with a friend and I found 210 pennies, 6 quarters, 21 dimes and 6 nickels. This is a park that has been hunted heavily by other and that is why so many pennies. The other searchers leave the pennies going for the big stuff. I found a silver dime, 1944, at about 5" and a couple of Wheaties in the pennies. Yes, I am tired, but it was fun. How did my partner do? I knew you would ask -- he found 17 quarters, 11 dimes, 56 pennies, 2 nickels and a silver ring -- he uses a Whites DFX. The only reason he found more quarters was because I was spending so much time digging pennies, I just cannot pass them up, and it is surprising how often they turn out to be dimes. What happens is in wet ground those pennies sound off like dimes, so I have to dig them. Now, the Bottle caps I did not count but there were plenty of them. I am loving my F70 and remember, I am searching parks that have been searched and search again. Like my partner, Joe, says, "we have a hobby with are replenish-able resource" As for the deep silver, I am still not finding anything down to 9 and 10" I have found some coin at 6" and when you are looking into the hole it seems like 10", all the way up the hilt of my gator digger but "silver", I'm thinking these place I am looking have so thoroughly picked over for the past 50 years that all the is really left is clads. When hunting trash filled areas, like these parks are, the task of finding deep silver is nearly impossible, especially if there is no deep silver to be found. I did find the one silver dime, but I am not so sure this was not in the ground that long. Also, another thing to consider when debating over deep silver, I have found clads down where the deep silver is supposed to be, not to mention the occasional aluminum can, and if the clads are moving down beyond 5 and 6" inches then where is the deep silver? Right, beyond what any detector can reach. Next, I witnessed a person digging fresh ground that apparently never been search and he was finding silver after silver coin not more than 2" from the surface. So? I guess it is where you find it. I know that my F70 is find what others have missed, or skipped over. Well, thanks guys for all the help and advice. Oh, and I did reset sens. back to a +3 and that helped quiet things down a lot, plus the new coil 11"DD replacement all is well.

Man...I am so happy for you! And a silver dime too! :clapping: I went back and read this whole thread and remember what a fun time we all had trying to help! Well, buddy, you now have that Fast hunting with the F70 mastered! Well Done! :beers::please:

Update: Months later: I called the tech at Fisher and they hung on the phone with me while in a hunt so they could hear and see what I was talking about with my problem -- turns out I am not crazy after all -- seems I remember someone suggesting it is the "operator, not the machine" -- hum, but not every time. I sent the machine in and they checked it out and replaced the Coil, brand new 11" DD replacement with new warranty. Since the new coil, I have found lots of loot, 12 rings, over $200 in quarters, have not wrapped and counted the dimes and nickels yet. This morning I went out with a buddy and found 210 pennies, 8 quarter, 30 dimes, 8 nickels. Don't know why so many pennies? It is not unusual to fine 40-50 pennies on an outing but this was a real penny fest. I know some MD heads pass pennies up but I have found that sometimes a dime will masquerade as a penny, or I have found dimes under pennies, so I dig all the pennies -- besides, it is good exercise, he, he, he. Loving my F70. I have found the Sensitivity scale is not as important for me as some like. I find coins as deep with a sens set at 60 as at 99, with lots less noise -- I search really trashy areas and find lots of bottle caps, still. I think I can read them but can't trust myself to believe it so I dig them. What is the Sens setting for anyway? Is it really for depth? I may be all wrong on this but it just does not seem to be that important for the hunting I am doing -- I found a mercury dime at about 5", if you count coil height from the top of the grass, this would translate to 7", with a sens set at 60? I don't know, maybe it does matter, maybe someone could explain why the sens should be set as high as possible. I am set at Thes -3, Sens 66, de, disc 25 and tone at 3H and enjoying some good success.

Sens was explained to me sort of like how your high beams work on a car...

in a foggy (ground) situation, high beams (sens) are not as effective as low beams (sens)
I cannot run any hotter than 60 ish up here either, and the sweet spot for thresh is -3 all signals crisp and tight with those settings, any attempt to run hotter washes out and fogs up the signal for me in my dirt around here...I'm happy with it, good to know we have power to spare if we ever get in some clean dirt situation....Mud

Update to the up date back in Feb:

I have entered this info in other places -- turns out it was the 11' DD coil. I sent the machine into Fisher ($15, postage) and they had it about a week and sent it back with a new coil installed. They also replaced the battery compartment. Works great now. Now when I make a setting it stays. Since the fix in March, I have found 12 rings, and lots of coin in city parks. I am finding stuff in parks that have been heavily searched. I love this F70 and that DD coil really knows how to separate the targets and with my indispensable Garrett PinPointer things are good. Yesterday I came back with 13 quarters, 10 dimes, 48 pennies and 5 nickels in a 2 hour hunt. The day before that was really unusual, I found 220 pennies, 30 dimes and 8 quarters -- 3 hours -- and I was beat. I have heard of others having this chattering problem and would suggest having the coil looked at. My settings, for now, Thres -3, Sens 66, de, tones 3H.

azsh07 and Mudpuppy >> you guys are the best and thanks for all the help --- This is an UPDATE -- I post in a couple of other places but it was in this thread I first came and you two were so much help. Your advice and guidance is worth ? Well, a lot. In this update the problem I was having with my F70 DD coil turned out to be a faulty coil. The techs at Fisher were great, actually had me call them on the cell phone when out searching and when the machine began doing what it was doing. After this they told me to send the machine in to them and they tested it and replaced the 11" DD coil with a brand new warrantied coil. Since then I began putting what you guys were telling me to do and try -- wow! Everything started making sense and I began finding coin in place others (including myself) had traveled before and finding what they missed. So far, 12 rings, 6 of some value (opps, 13 rings, forgot I just found another ring last week) Bottle caps still drive me crazy -- I can read a new cap, but old caps rusting away in the soil really give a hard beep, like a quarter. Still, when it hits a coin there is no doubt. The depth reading works great and the ID reading us accurate (excluding bottle caps) -- One day I dug 40 bottle caps but found 13 quarters, 30 dimes and 70 pennies, so, digging those bottle caps will continue. One thing I keep forgetting to try is Mudpuppies suggestion to change the HZ. Love this machine, and I have found that I can reduce the Sens and it will still find coin at good depth. Love the DD coil, it is capable of separating targets in some pretty tight trash laden ground. Thanks again, guys

Hi, thanks to Mud I have been having some pretty good hunts of late. I hit this park and there was tons of trash and my detector was going nuts. I remembered something mud had said about detuning and swinging his coil like a week whacker -- so, what the heck -- thought he was joking -- I detuned down to Sens 50 and started swinging, the noise dropped to nothing, that is until I hit a coin. Funny thing, I was digging coins at 7", if you count the 2-3" of grass. First hunt I raked in one silver ring and 51 quarters :surprised: . Went out again a few days later, and only manage 13 Quarters. Then today my hunt buddy and I went out to the same park -- big ball field so we go on Sunday mornings, and He took 18 quarters and I snatched up 29 quarters and another silver ring with a stone setting. I have used this same technic for about a month now and it seems to be a winner. Weed whacker, indeed :clapping: Dan

Thats some good shootin!:clapping:

You try that coil hop technique for pin pointing, and you will be very happy...instead of swinging side to side over a target, just gently bounce the coil on top of the ping, take one step as you bounce the coil to the 90 degree angle, keep that ping right under the center of the coil, and the target is directly under the sweet spot of the coil in an are the size of a golf ball. It works way much faster than using the PP button, and is deadly in the trash to isolate one target at a time with this big 11"dd coil...try it and report back!

Hi guys,
I had to post this for the benefit of all -- I am assuming none of you live in my neck of the woods -- don't need the competition. This information comes from, Gene Scullion, Sr. Sales Mgr., First Texas Products, Fisher. I asked a couple of questions covered in the little manual and Gene was kind enough to share. The manual suggest a "best Hz" for finding gold but the settings on the F70 are on a scale of F1-F7 with not indicator as to what the Hz is? So I asked to clear this up and Gene did just that. Then we share experiences in trying to detect or at least have a shot at uncovering gold, like in jewelry -- great info. Hope you enjoy this info as much as I ---

Gene Scullion says;
Switching frequencies is one way to quiet EMI. If your machine chatters when the coil is held motionless in the air, its EMI and not ground mineralization. The frequency shifting is very minor, all 7 settings vary between 13158Hz and 12821Hz. Each shift is about 56-57 Hz, so it doesn

Wow, I read over these past posts and man, do I repeat myself a lot? Excited about getting my F70 doing what it was designed to do, I guess. Since last Sept, I found a park right in the middle of town and I found 51 Quarters, 28 Dimes, 8 Nickels and a silver ring, in about 2-3 hour search. Since then, I have take a my hunt buddy out to this park and I found another 29 Quarters and he found 19, then this last time we went out he found 8 Quarters and I found 13 plus 30 dimes. All from this one park in three Sundays. For some reason, it seems, other local hunters have by passed this park. I talked to Park security and they had nothing to say except for asking how I like my machine. Can't figure it. The main park, also near city center is heavily hunted but my fisher seems to find things just below. My bud and I hunt early mornings and the other guys all hunt in the evenings. I am going to retune my F70 and go back out, maybe I will find some gold? Peace, Dan

F70 Sens 50, Thres -3, de, Disc 15 and everything is good. I have found 12 rings, hundreds of quarters and dimes and other bits and pieces of jewelry. the F70 is doing great and with he DD coil it is able to separate the targets in the trash. I am finding coins and an occasion ring in heavily hunted parks. Nickel a bunch which others seem to just skip over. Dimes galore which I think are mistake for pennies -- some lazy hunters don't dig the pennies, fine with me. Did you know that 1981 and before are all copper? Half the pennies I dig are copper. Also, did you know that if you happen to find a 1943 copper penny ( the year they made all steel pennies, the War penny) it is worth thousands of dollars. A few thousand coppers in that year were stamped by accident before the steel blanks started through. Also, nickels are still nickels and worth the price of a nickel and more, it is the only coin that has not been changed to a lesser metal. So, leave those pennies and over looked dimes and missed nickels for me, I'll take them and with the help of this forum I now have my F70 working overtime. I found a Wheatie at nearly 8" and a silver Roosevelt dime at 6" among some trash. Yes, I am having fun now, thanks you all -- peace, Dan

Elgin, I know this is a comment to an very old comment about using the SL mode. I have, since Feb or 2013, been using my F70 using Mud's prime settings with Thresh at -3, Sens at 50 and in dE mode with Disc at 18. I have found BBs as deep as 6" and a single diamond ear ring about 33" down and with a little more coverage found the other side. I just started trying our the SL mode and found myself digging old rusty weird nails about 10" down -- too much digging for me, I needed a shovel, and what a disappointment to find a rusty nail. So, I guess it is all a matter of perspective, some don't want to waste time hunting for small pieces of jewelry (use a good pin pointer will solve this problem) and those who do not want to waste there time digging iron. For artifact hunters this would be sweet -- like I said a matter of perspective. I just don't want to go into the local parks with a shovel, people walking through show some interest, even to stop and talk while others look at me like I am defacing their front yards, so I can only imagine if I had a bigger tool. I have dug items as far as my dig tool will reach and that is about 7" to the hilt. Now this beings up depth readings and postings that have always troubled me. Are we talking about depths, in the field, from the bottom of the coil to the coin, or object of interest? Or, are we talking about depth from the surface of the earth to the target? When you consider I dug a dime at 6" measure of my dig tool, hilt 1" above top soil then the actual read depth from coil to target was nearly 9" as the grass was pretty tall. I dig most targets within the 2-4" range but if you count the air distance of the coil from actual surface, due mostly to grass height you could add a minimum another 2" in depth of find. I do not know of anyone, excluding beach hunters, that can run their coil flat to the surface of the earth consistently. So, back to the depth question -- are we measuring from the surface of the dirt to the target or from the bottom of the coil. This may be where the confusion comes in from those doing air tests on their coils then finding targets at depths about 2" less. Maybe I am the only one confused, maybe there is a standard of measuring for coin shooters that I missed? How about, C6, for from coil to target equals total 6" and or T4" would be Topsoil to target 4"? Just and idea. Peace brother Clad heads. Dan

Right on Mud, great tip and it works. I do a little wiggle, shaking the coil like a little tremor and it lock on like crazy and is 100% reliable. Also proves the target because it will not lock on like that on a tin can. Thanks for the tip Mud -- just confirming what you are saying. And thanks for all the great tips -- the best one, from you, that I love is the 'Weed Whacker" tip, works great, even in the trash areas -- Peace, Dan

Uhhh...
I hope you meant 13" and that is a typo.
There are limits on depth that even I, crazy as I am, want to attempt to reach in a public park setting.

being familiar with those settings, I'm gonna say Dbax meant 3"! a small diamond earring at 3" is a tough target!
