Fisher pinpointer??

I sure wish I would of saved my money and put it towards the Garrett. Not having a lot to spend I bought an Automax V4 for around $25. When I opened the rather long box ( 18 inches ) it came in I just about fell over. The V4 was almost as long, I can't even carry it on my side it feels like a billy club. A friend of mine went MDing with me the other day and she offered to carry it ( for protection ) since we were in a really isolated place. I can't wait to get the Garrett.
 
Hey i'll take one!!!!, I got a old Whites Bullseye I that I can't even use, it just eats 9 volt batteries let alone even gets a inch.As fast as i put a battery in it ,its dead next day LOL If it works i'll take it :rage:
 
Here is a couple of pictures of my Harbor Freight PP, one of the pictures shows a quarter setting at about 5/8" the detection distance. I used this unit until I got the Garrett Pro and it was better than no PP. I have the AutoMax V4, not worth carrying. My brother has the Fisher F-Point as he said not even a good toy.

So if I was looking for a PP to use until I could get the money to buy a Garrett Pro, I would go for the Harbor Freigtht one, for under $20.

Agree with Ron about the Cen-Tech as a sub until you can come up with the cash for a Pro-Pointer. I don't have a Pro-Pointer yet, and do have a Cen-Tech. It will hit a quarter at least 1 1/2" (not on edge, but flat to the base of the pinpointer). It is better than nothing, and sounds from the descriptions of some folks who own Fishers that it's a better unit than those. It comes with a 90-day warranty.

Was quite happy with the Little Wizard and I still have it. Its full of dirt now but still works and I use it as a loaner. Gets 2" on nickels and Quarters in the ground, has as wide edge for that first look and then you can turn it on edge to zero in. I used it extensively until I decided to try a Pocket Uniprobe, and decided I needed the Uniprobe headphone pinpointer set.

20 bucks at most woodworking supply stores.

I had a Fisher pinpointer. I agree it was a piece of ****** . I called the company and talked to a service rep. he agreed it was bad. they made them so they could throw one in for free if you bought the F2. The F2 is a good detector, don't get me wrong, but the pointer is worth about what you paid for it. I bought a cen from Harbor Freight and am saving up fpr a Garrett pro pointer.

Below is a link to a video I made and uploaded to my own web space.
The idea was from a youtube video I saw where the guy used a coin to increase the sensitivity of the Garett Pro-pointer, I thought I would expand the idea for the Harbor Freight pin-pointer and it works! and very well at that (if the video does).

With the ring you can pre-adjust the unit's control to about 75% and leave it, then you can adjust it from sliding the ring or band up and down the shaft. The ring in the video came from a small dog choker chain. I split it at the joint, spread it just enough that it still had a little spring tension against the shaft. You can slide it but it has enough grip to hold that position. (any metal ring, or band will work if it fits the shaft)

When I tried the video from my computer I got an option to either open or save the file, I selected "Open" and it worked fine! I guess if you want to download it you could click "Save".

After I did that video of the Cen-tech pin-pointer I changed the metal ring to a metal band, the band lays flatter and stays in place better.
The band I used came from a bearing type bushing from a fork lift. I had to spread it a little bit and I also filed the inside edges smooth so the band wouldn't dig into the plastic shaft.
So for anybody interested I have included a couple of pictures below. For warmer weather detecting and for CHEAP this isn't a bad pinpointer!

How I use my Propointer...


1. The regular way....mine will go at least 2 inches in depth to locate targets still buried in the bottom of the hole or in a side wall.

2. You can use the side scan option to run over dirt you have already dug out of the hole and find those tiny, dirt colored pieces of metal.

3. I can point the tip into the ground and find exactly where the target is laying if it is up to 2 inches deep. If the ground is damp, about 2 inches further on even coin size targets.

4. If I cannot find the target easily due to large bleeding signals or halo effect, I put the tip n the ground turn the unit off then on again which will ground balance the unit and make it easy to find the real location of the target

5. I can supertune the unit and make it go further to pick up those iffy deeper targets.

6. I can detune the unit to narrow down the field and really zero in on the target location.

7. I can use it to find pipes and nails in the studs inside walls in my home.

I also have the Fisher unit that does not seem to do any of this stuff very well due to the much smaller field it emits.
I have a Harbor Freight unit that works as well or better than the Fisher at about 1/4 the price.

On one forum I read a member lent his Propointer to his father who had been detecting for years, the first words out of his mouth after recovering 2 targets were..." I finally found the other half of my detector!"

The Propointer is that good!

Hi Bob, That's the right way to start out, with a CEN-TECH for $15.00, which FAR SUPERSEDES that FISHER F-POINT!! Then, MOVE ON to ONE of
the ABSOLUTE BEST -- GARRETT Pro-Pointer!! Best of LUCK, Les Robinson

"DON'T SPEND ANY AMOUNT OF GOOD MONEY" on junk like the F-Point LOL and that's why forum's like this are so important.

The Garrett Pro-Pointer is the way to go in a hand held PP, the Cen-Tech is good for warm weather hunting above 50-60 deg F. but a good choice until you can get the Garrett. The F-point will PP but I think your lucky to find one that gets more than 1/2" and that's if the battery cap stays on. Good Luck!
 
I had 2 F points one broke and the other one dosent like the cold it wont adjust when its cold out. I wouldnt waste the money on it go with a garret. I had a cent tech it is decent for the price. but love my bullseye next one will be a pro pointer HH

wow , i am glad i picked up a cen-tech for less than 20 bucks . never heard this much bashing a product before . will save my pennies for a garret .

Whew! Fisher makes an awesome detector but it sounds like they need to go back to the drawing board for a pinpointer. I ordered a Garrett pro pointer yesterday and I can't wait to get it. I also ordered a Lesche relic hunter shovel. Early birthday presents to myself.
 
I was a real sceptic and had to go get one and I love it.... a Centec from harbor Freight For only $16.99... I couldn't believe it!!!! It works great!!!!!!!
