Flat button

Found this flat button today. My very first one! I was excited. Does anyone know how old it might be?

How large is it? The larger flat buttons with that style braised shank (half dollar sized) fell out of style in the late 1700s from my research. If it is large sized it is most likely mid to late 1700s. If it is smaller it might be early 1800s. But could still be a cuff button from the 1700s. Amazing find!

Congrats on your 1st flat button.. I also believe late 1700s, early 1800s date wise... every place that ive ever found large cent ive also found flat buttons, so go over that area thoroughly and dont be afraid to dig a few iffy signals.. good luck..

Did the large cents you've found give iffy signals? I have found many flat buttons and musket balls on my property. But coine-wise nothing but clad. Very vexing

As to your ? scenario... do large cents give iffy signals? no, generally most large cents and flat buttons give good signals ...BUT, when I hunt an area with 1700 to early 1800s potential I dig any signal higher than iron .. ive dug a few large cents thru the years that didnt give very good signals either due to depth or its proximity to iron.. the only flowing hair large cent I ever found really didnt sound so great in the ground ...I hunt these types of sites with sov gt without meter so all targets are tone only.. point is if your in the zone age wise it only makes sense to be willing to dig some targets that you might pass over at a newer sight... happy hunting....

Thanks that's sound advice! Thanks
