I am listing this for Charlie. He was wondering if anyone could give their opinion on this piece. It is approx. 10 inches from top of dogs head to bottom of foot. It is blacksmith made and is iron. The leg and foot is one piece and the dogs head and spike end is another. The leg was peened to the top so it has a swinging action. The only thing we could think that it would be is a door knocker. The spike would be driven into the side of a door. I have taken 5 photos and I will add them one at a time. We hope to hear some thoughts on this unique piece. Thanks!

Below is a link to a hand forged project--A human leg door knocker.
Although the swinging mechanism is different, there are some similarities to yours in the shape of the leg and foot. As well the leg here is also 10". This design based on a 15th century French door knocker.
A test--they mention at the link this advice: "As with all door knockers, make sure the knocker hangs back against the anvil block by gravity otherwise the wind will make it swing and drive the houseowner nuts."
Perhaps you can try this out by inserting the spike part in a cardboard box (as it would go in a door) and see if it the knocker hangs correctly....
I'd say you are on the right track. Neat whatzit, thanks for posting!
