Food for thought

Ive been watching a couple of NASA Toms (Tom Dankowski) DVD on Relic and beach hunting. A lot of good information.... but what i thought was interesting and really makes you think is we often dont appreciate enought the old coins we find. He mentioned that a find of a 1909 Barber half back in the day would stop everything because it represented a half days pay. Can you imagine.... half a days pay? Also we often find CUT LCs that were used to make change. Ive noticed a couple of posts recently where some gold coins were posted..... Man that guy must have had a hard time telling his wife he lost that kind of money. But then face value was face value wasnt it? Another thing he mentioned was ware time. He indicated that silver is an extremely soft metal and that in full circulation the average silver coin would show significant ware in less than 3 years. That gives you some indication as to how long that coin may have been circulated before it was lost.

I never fail to remeber what a dime, nickel, quarter, even pennies meant to me when i was a kid in the late 50`s early 60`s. Everytime I find a coin, silver and otherwise from long ago I think of what it meant to whoever lost it. Just got in from a short curb strip hunt and found a 3 wheat pocket spill. It crossed my mind what someone must have thought when they realized they were lost. Heck, 3 pennies could buy me a pack of bb`s and a piece of candy when I was a sprout.

That is something I like to think about also Dewcon,my dad worked in the oilfields all his life..he told me in the 30's and 40's his pay was $90.00 a month working 7 days a week.
