Food in the New Testament

As we saw yesterday, the distinction between clean and unclean foods did not start with the Jewish nation. Nevertheless, many today assert that in New Testament times, the Bible obliterated this distinction, and it does not matter now what people eat.

Yet, that really does not make a whole lot of sense, if you think about it. Diet, after all, plays such an important role in our health; thus, it is very hard to imagine why the New Testament would show no concern about diet, which is so crucial to healthful living.

Read 1 Timothy 4:1-5 (New International Version) Instructions to Timothy "The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer." What is Paul saying? Does this mean that we can now eat unclean meat?

In this particular case, Paul was dealing with future heresies that would forbid believers to partake of two things that God gave humanity at creation, food and marriage. The foods involved are all foods that God had created for human consumption. Paul

According to God's Holy Word we are to use godly wisidom and common sense in all things! Cleanliness is next to godliness! We are to make sure our food and surroundings around us are clean and not polluted with bacteria which harms people, especially anyone who has a cut or injury or even an illness caused by something done or not done to make sure they live and do right in the world and in the sight of God! Moderation in everything is what is best! Be sure certain foods are cooked well after washing and preparing them and the cooking vessels and countertops are clean and free from dirt and bacteria as best as we can, as it is possible! May God Bless! Amen! Ma Betty
