Fooled by Uncle Sam again..

Hunted my backyard for 30 minutes after work. It's a 1954 Uncle Sam play nickel. I found an identical one (1952) under my neighbor's clothesline last year. Looks like a silver coin when you first rub the dirt off. Still cool...I have a collection now. I just about dropped a turd when that gold popped out. My wife thinks it's a napkin holder....gold-plated maybe? It sure cleaned up nice.....good times !!

Looks like sterling and gold together. Nice finds either way  Congrats

That is a really nice napkin holder. Any marks (like hallmarks) on it? That play money is always a fooler. Neat finds and HH

Id be surprised if its a napkin holder. We do antiques and ive seen that before but ill be darn if i can remember what it is. But i would bet its Stirling. Ive got some of that money and some of the FDR copper ones. way cool to find.

cool stuff dave

Ed....great collection !!

Here is a decent close-up shot of the mystery find. Seems to be made of some base metal dipped in gold something or other.

I thought I had my first ever 3 center' last summer when I dig one of those exact same play money coins Dave:biggrin:

Like you said....it sure looks like old silver til' you get it in your hand and it has no weight to it.

It's then you realize you got punked:cool:

Yeah, when I snapped the first photo I still did'nt know what I had......I got punked alright. Even my 6 year old daughter knew it was'nt real once I rubbed it clean and let her hold it..lol.

Wait until you find a Canadian Fishcale, then you will think you found a Seated Half Dime. Those Canadian Nickels are always another coin that fools you when popping out of the ground.

I have found multiple Play Coins through the years and it is fun to add more of them to the collection. Plus.....you know them Play Dimes are old and that Wheats & Silver could only be a step away. Good Luck and HH to you.:detecting:

Maybe, but not worth enough to part with. I saw some 5 cent ones for sale on E Bay for $3, and $12 for the half-dollar play money. I'll just keep them for my grandkids.
