i have the explorer 2 and have no real luck finding silver coins. i finde more with my whites dfx. from what i have seen on the minelab forum, you are verry good with the minelab at finding silver coins. if you will can you tell me how you have your explorer set up and do you run your sens in manuel or autoe? thanks if you can help me set mine up like yours.

Hey Steven,
I guess it all depends on what you mean by very good. For silver coin count I probably get smoked for numbers by most because I tend to hunt my older sites over and over even when they are on the quiet side. I'm just as interested in buttons, or even more so than silver so a day without coins doesn't necessarily mean a bad day. This type of hunting I dig all non ferrous targets no matter how small which means coins are usually pretty easy to pic out. It's kinda like playing snooker for 2 hours than going to the much smaller 8 ball table. I'm not sure what type of sites you hunt but here are my settings that really don't change because my sites don't change enough to need to. Keep in mind I worked my way up to these so most people would likely find it a little noisy in the iron infested areas. (where I hunt)
If I don't mention a setting it's because of it being at the factory preset. These are far from what I began with but are what I settled on for good.
Sens. 26-29 (Conductive) (almost always 27 or 2:geek:
Gain 10 ( set that way since day 1)
Deep on Fast off (never changes but I plan to try fast next year on new sites just when I have to pick up the pace not to be trounced on coin finds)
Iron Mask -14 (is my permanent setting but I started back at -8 and worked from there. About 1.5 years ago I began to bump my sens. and lower my IM a notch or so two every 1-2 months. Now no matter how hot I run it's pretty normal.
Stock coil (all the time.. tried others but I think the 10.5 is perfect for where I hunt and what I look for. If Coiltec made a 12.5 I would probably try it.)
Gee is that it, I thought the Explorer was complicated with a million different settings I'm probably missing something.
Another thing I can add to settings and most people never talk about it is how you swing makes a difference. In iron the most successful Explorer users I have hunted with take very short sweeps of maybe 6"-8" and work from many different angles. Even in semi clean ground they still swing slow and sweep no more than a 1.5'-2'. It was back when I started to change my settings I also changed how I swung and there is no question it helped. Putting many hours in also made a very big difference in being able to apply what I was try to do. The Explorer is a pretty darn good deep detector with awesome disc. once you know it. Most silver coins are just a matter of swinging over and knowing what a deep good hit sounds like. (if it's deep) Put the time in and you will be very happy.

... good information! My good man, I think you said it all right there!
Don't push the sense too high, but push it all you can.
Crank the gain, although I tend to run mine lower sometimes.
Try Deep. Nobody knows exactly why... but try it...
Open her up in IM as far as you can stand it.
Stick with the basic equipment, and learn it well.
And swing it slow. Slower when you're onto something that might be... um... hmmm... DIG IT!
The rest is all user preference, especially sound response, Fe or Cond, both of which have their advantages.
The Explorer is so versatile it boggles me sometimes, but it's also very capable if you take the time to learn it well. Keep posting the tips, I'm enjoying every post! Catch ya in chat some time again...
