For coin shooting as my focus, would the Explorer be overkill or still a good choice ? thanks :)

I already have the rechargeable Minelab batteries...& for the other I picked up a 36 pack of batteries at home depot for $10...I am gonna have to admit though that a pinpointer is probably next in line after the coil...HH..TT

I already picked up an 8" coil. The X1 probe and X5 coil are on my wish list before spring. Winter is upon us here in Wisconsin.

That I spend too much time trying to find targets & therefore I can justify ??? the probe...Depending on the weather I should be able to get enough hours work to get it by Christmas...I'm thinking the 4X7 because all I have right now is the 10"

Tom I have and use the sunray probe but also carry a White's 140mm pinpointer just for those times when it is best. The 4 x 7 is real nice.

Atta boy,

I purchased the sunray 8" coil and love the performance. It also lightens the detector. However, I have noticed that it does not have quite the depth penetration that the 10.5" coil does. But for medium trashy areas you can't beat it. Happy Hunting Grounds,

A pin pointer is a must have item in a detectorist inventory while hunting. There are alot of different one's to choose from. a hunting companion of mine purchased a high dollar one that is hip mounted and has a detachable probe. However, the tone that it produces is not loud enough to hear with his head set on, or when cars pass by. I personally prefer the v-4 bullseye pin pointer because the probe is about 10" or so an that makes it easy to probe 8-10 inch deep holes. It also has a vibrate mode if you want to use it. I have found that it also is more sensitive compared to other ones I have used before. Kellyco is where I purchased it from. About $140.00.
Happy Hunting Grounds,

Whoops, on the last post discussing the pin pointer's, I meant to say V-4 AUTOMAX, instead of V-4 bullseye. Happy Hunting Grounds,

I'm going to tell you like I was told and then told savage. Get the Explorer, you will not regret it!
I had metal detected some when I was younger with a machine my dad brought home that must have been a payment on a car instead of money. My dad owned a used car lot. This was back awhile and the machine was totaly blue, I mean everything was blue. I don't remember what kind it was, but I did have fun with it. That all went away when high school was over and I went on the road playing with a band and was sleeping most all day. Thirty years later when I decided to get what some call a real job, I meet a co-worker who asked me if I ever metal detected. I told him the above story and that I would really like to do it again now that I would be up during the day light hours. He told me that the detectors today were computerized and way more advanced than what I had used in the pass. This really got me interested in what was out there and he told me to look at them on the internet. So I did! I was in awe of how far things had come with detectors and there was so many to choose from. I have always belived you get what you pay for and price was not a factor. I spent a week reading everything I could about all the high dollar machines and had it narrowed down to three detectors. A Whites DFX, Garretts Infinium and the Minelab Explorer 2. Well my friend at work didn't say anything to me about detectors for that whole week until I told him I was looking to buy one of these three detectors. When we had talked before I had not asked him what kind he had and he did not say. This time I asked him what kind of detector he had and this is what he said to me. Get the Explorer and you will not regret it! I did get the Explorer and I have not regreted it! The Explorer is only as hard as you want to make it. It is an awesome machine!
Me and my brother Savage have always done things together so I figured he would want to metal detect also. WRONG! He didn't think that was anything he would want to do. I talked him into just going on the internet and look at the machines and see what was out there and that was all it took, he was interested. He asked me what machine was I going to get and I told him I had already ordered a Explorer because my friend Willie John said I would'nt regret it. Savage said thats what he wanted also. Well to make an already long story shorter, Savage had never metal detected before and now is known as the silver king in our hunting club. He wins the most silver coins catagory at or meetings find of the month segment just about every month. He's won the last five or six months in a row! We have over 70 members in our club! That should tell you something about the Explorer's ability to find coins. Thats not all we find with the Explorer either, but he can tell you about that if he wants too. We have both found some really nice and rare relics as well and he only uses the quick start program as were I like all metal mode myself.
Most all our club members use Whites and since we joined a little over a year ago there are four now and three more also want Explorers!
So my answer to your question is YES! Get the Explorer, you wont regret it!

Usually, the V4-AUTOMAX pin pointer will sound of about 1" from a target about the size of a coin. What I like about that feature is that I can pin point the target before I actually see it. Therefore, reducing my chances of knicking or scratching a desirable coin or relic. The V-4 has a sensitivity knob that can be adjusted for Maxim + 0r - sensitivity. I hope the helps you Tomtown. Happy Hunting Grounds,
Savage

Great post Sunzabeach! I guess every detectorist has their favorite particular items that they target when they hunt. Some my like beach hunting for rings, coin shooting ect. I guess I prefer that sweet scream on the Explorer when it detects silver. I am in the process of getting a water machine any day. The Explorer is right on the money for relics, coins ,jewelry, and any other hunting conditions.
I stumbled onto some relics in a local park last summer and called sunzabeach, who promptly met me there. Within about 20 min or so, he produced a confederate sword wreath buckle. That day I retrieved a union marine coat button. We still haven't found the other half to the buckle yet. But as we all know the hunt is 90% of the fun of the hobby! Happy Hunting Grounds,

Savage

I had to chuckle reading this post....two months ago I went to my first ever CLUB meeting...The HOT detector of the day was the DFX & that was the only one being activly discussed (I only had a MXT)....This last weekend at the local highschool I ran into one of the members there (he was useing a spectrum)I had my new SE...He told me that since my visit that four DFX users had sold their units & gotten Explorers...He told me they had gone out with a member that used an Explorer & became instant converts....Next thing I knew he had my headphones on & wanted to check targets out...I spent the next hour with him comparing & digging targets...I think he's next in line at the minelab dealer...:starwars:
