On the digital screen of an Exp. 11 both conduct and ferrous numbers come up, while on the XS only the one in use comes up..Does this help especially in the gold ring area with two numbers to help pick out gold rings from the junk which mimics them. I personally hunt with the digital screen and am a silver coin hunter and a 28 or 30 needs investigating while a 27 is an iffy. Have gotten some deep buffalo and shield nickels and of course we know gold rings cover a large area and any help would cut down the odds..Only have an XS but 11 owners anyone have any ideas...I do know a nickel seems to hit much harder but gold rings have me confused and usually use another target machine when hunting new parks for gold rings and clad as some have audio variances and harmonics to help cut down the odds..Any help or thoughts out there...would be nice to use an Explorer exclusively....

Dan,
I'm sure there will be those that disagree with this comment, so this is simply one persepective for you to consider.
While the EXII does show both a Ferrous and Conductive value for targets unlike the EX S & XS which only depicted a Conductive value, all three detectors do NOT "lock-on" to a target when they hit one; i.e., the numbers can vary on the same target. There have been several posts and web sites that list Dual Digital values for various targets and as those have tested their own targets, find that both numbers can vary by +/- 1 number which makes it hard to memorize what numbers corrrespond to specific targets.
For example, a silver quarter can read:
- 00 28
- 00 29
- 01 28
- 01 29
Remember that you really only have 32 Ferrous and 32 Conductive values that can appear in the Dual Digital mode.
The SmartFind screen offers much more precise target identification and differentiation - especially for the type of targets you are referring to; i.e., nickels, jewelry, tabs, etc. Try using 1) Full Screen to better discren differences in that region and 2) Ferrous audio as many users find it easier to tell these targets apart based on Ferrous content rather than Conductivity.
I personally hunt in SmartFind 95%+ of the time for that very reason. On the other hand, I know there are those that like that mode - I just find the additional information provided in SmartFind to be a plus when deceiding if a target is worth recovering or not. Remember the old adage . . . . "It's all a matter of math - how many good targets do you find per hour of hunting?" The more trash I can identify before taking the time to recover it teh more "keepers" I will have in my pouch at the end of the day.

SIDE NOTE: The Quattro does a much better job in terms of "locking on" to target ID values. In the Trash Density LOW setting, there is virtually no variation on targets; i.e., nickels read "14", silver quarters read "38", etc. While it lacks the SmartFind screen of the Explorer's, the digital display on the Quattro is precisiely what some users are looking for.

Hope this helps . . . . . Andy Sabisch
PS: Just got back from PA and don't miss the weather . . . . supposed to be in the 60's here this afternoon . . . . almost T-shirt hunting weather!

Andy welcome to N.E. Pa. where one can expect a down period. Guess you must be visiting the Southern relatives...
Excellent post as indeed even if you get two numbers they can vary a number or so.
Myself use an XS and if its a 28 or 30 while hunting silver I switch over to the target crosshair to give further info. Just can't stand that bouncing crosshair and in reallity that high silver audio stops me in my tracks before I even look at the screen. Nice part of an Explorer has 3 ways for one to decide to dig.
Mitch a local hunter has a nice site in TREASUREPORT rel rings.and one evening saw him dig two old gold high school rings from the 20's. and he dug both of them real deep so he handles an Explorer well along with having a nice site.
Unfortunately have no southern relatives so will be a while till I hit the fields. I know all are waiting for your new book so enjoy the warm weather while you can..
More and more I can see a Quattro may look like a Explorer but indeed it has different guts...and one wonders is it the equal of an Explorer even though it is more user friendly...

I have tested some gold rings up to 18K and found that you must dig anything close to 10-05. So I don't think that buys you anything because pulltabs are close to this setting.
Maybe check Beach Forum as those guys find more rings. Good luck!

All I can say is that when you want something to happen, Murphy's Law strikes and it all goes south!
The printer I have used for all of my books since the early 90's has always gotten my orders out in less time than what I was initially promised. Well, this time I expected the same and guess what . . . . Thanksgiving, the flu, Christmas, etc., etc., etc. I heard all the stories and the date kept slipping!
Well they have left the printers and have been told that they will be in the distributors hands no later than next week.
Thanks for the patience and also thanks for the input that many of you provided in terms of tips (special thanks go to Joe DeMarco & Desi Dunne), photos and questions that made me redo many of the pages to ensure the questions were addressed and it is as complete and informative as possible.
Have a great new year (and a productive one in the field)!
Andy Sabisch

Andy,
What in fact is the Trash Density HIGH on the Quattro doing? Since Golden Gate Park, MT's Hunting Grounds is layered with trash, shouldn't one use the Trash Density of the Quattro on HIGH or am I mistaken
