For York Maine and Clearwater Florida beaches

I have the 305 with the stock coil.
I've read about the 10.5 HF DD, but when going to Kellyco sites I don't see any 10.5 coils.
I'm great in the dry sand with the stock coil but lose it in the wet sand.
They also have the 5 x 10 HF.
What coil would you recommend, or would it be better to get a water machine ?
And will they ever come out with a SEF coil for the Xterra ?

Happy Huntring

Bruce..first of all I never try to hunt in the water. So being waterproof or water resistant is not important to me. I use both the 10.5 DD MF coil and the 5X10 DD HF coil with a good deal of success. In the dry sand I run both coils to the max (30). I have found that lowering the sensitivity really helps to stabilize the 5X10 HF coil. The 10.5 MF coil has a tendency to remain stable in the wet sand. I usually run the sensitivity around 28 and click down one notch until it stabilizes. Hope this helps. HH TomB

Bruce,

I just stumbled across this post. I am relative new to detecting, and am just breaking in my new Minelab 705 with the stock coil (or should I say it's breaking me in?). What caught my eye is your mention of Clearwater as well as York, Maine. My wife and I live in Seminole and we also vacation in York Beach at least once a year (usually in September). I had not even considered taking my detector up there this fall, but now that i think about it, Long Sands Beach sounds like an awesome place to hunt!

I have been hitting the beaches the last two evenings at sunset. It is very enjoyable to watch a beautiful sunset, get some fresh air as well as the exercise (which I need a lot of!). It's almost eerie as the crowds leave right after sunset. One minute there are hundreds of people around you and a few minutes later you almost have the entire beach to yourself. In addition to being a beach cleaner, thus far I have found a few quarters, dimes and pennies, as well as a small sterling silver ring with what appears to be a loop of very small diamonds. Doubt it's worth much, but it sure was inspiring to find it!

Like you, I am also doing just fine in the dry sand, but having major issues detecting in the wet sand... can't seem to eliminate the false hits with every swing. I'm sure it's do-able, but I obviously have a lot to learn with this machine. If you live in this area and want to hunt with someone who has a similar machine, we should try to meet up some time.

Happy hunting!

grouperguy,

So you know of long sand then you know of short sands also.
When the tide is real low there is a skeleton of an old ship there, and it's only seen a couple of times a year, and you can see the
ribs of the ship.
NO metal detecting in that area, but the playground just above is ok for some change.
Then if you get enough change you can go up to GoldenRod for some taffy :))
I'm from Rotterdam, NY and we go up there for long weekends. About four to five times a year. Just a quick get away. Usually nothing planned. Usually about 3 days to relax and unwind.
Just tired of the kid and dogs so we head out. It takes us about 3 hours to get to Wells, Maine and we usually
stay at the Ner's beach motel in Wells. When heading out through Wells and heading to Kennybunk there a place called
Drake Island. About a mile up from the fire station. There's and old ice cream store with a big duck on it on the left turn right there and that will bring you to it.
Hey might just meet up with you one day. I'll keep you in mind if we go in Sept.
When hunting Long Sands sweep by the rocks alway stuff there from people throwing their clothes. By the public bathroom.
Thanks for the reply..
Hope to meet up with you.

Happy Hunting
