Found a knife, need options

Found a nice husky utility kknife, still in good condition. how could I get it functional again?

Clarify. A utility knife is generally thought of as a box cutter.

[size=medium]Hi Joe, If all it has is a bit of rust and dirt. It is very simple, go to the dollar store and get a cheap plastic container a bit bigger than the knife. Put the knife in it and fill up the container about an inch higher over the knife with gasoline. Live it there for about a day or so. Get an old toothbrush and when you're ready to take your shiny new knife out remove whatever is left with it. I hope this helps. [/size]​

The utility knife is the newer folding stlye razor/boxcutter. Thanks for the tip about using gas, only thing rusty is the blade, that just needs replaced.

kerosene. I've gotten old chain saws and soaked rusted chain in it.

WE used to pour a bit of kerosene in the crankcase of old cars to flush the engine out and clean out all the sludge and crud.

No,no blades in the handle. this style doesn't hold them like the standard box cutter.

What a cheapo bummer. I used those things in my work for 36 years and they all carried spares in the handle. Must be a Chinese job. They ain't that smart. Steve has the best idea.

Sometimes a pocket knife to rusty to open can be put in some vinegar and left a day and the rust will be gone (or loose enough to clean). Just don't forget it and leave it there three or four weeks or the knife will be gone! Hmmmm you would think I might have done that wouldn't you. Bill In Texas

I use that same cutter at work. The reason is it is light and when the blade gets dull you can replace it by a visit to the tool trailer for free.

This post actually isn't a joke. Im new to detecting and was excited to find even a cheapo knife. now atleast I'll know how to clean a knife if I ever find a nice collectable like a Case knife. This knife will more then likely stay dirty and just be in my find box. I was more or less trying to.find cleaning methods in general. Thanks, Joe
