Found a NICE surprise in my scrap pile!

it was raining tonite so I decided to go thru my scrap pile before I gave it the final toss into the brass or copper bucket. When I originally dug this, I just thought it was a hunk of brass. Well I was cleaning off the dirt to decide if it was brass or copper and I saw some writing on it.....Erie RR, I thought I saw....no way! this isn't junk, it is a nice relic from the New York Erie RR, cool!! Now my question is what exactly is it? Guess it pays to check everything closely before you discard it or scrap it out!

Now that is really cool! Glad you saved that piece of history.

Great find and something that could be quite valuable to a RR collector. Since there is no number on the baggage tag, it is likely the type known as a shell or special. A paper tag with the passengers baggage number was inserted into this brass shell. That allowed the RR to reuse the brass portion over and over again. Here is a website that tells a bit about the history of tags. And I've copied a picture of one he has on his site for comparison. Same type tag, different RR. Nice recovery! HH Randy

That is a nice relic, don't you just love to find old stuff with writing on it! Finding out how old something is and what it was used for is exciting. Congrats -- Randy
