Found A Very Little Something

Old Longhair

Got out for a short hunt after work today, and went to a place that I've been to several times before with various machines/setups. There isn't much left there, but I was still able to pluck some clad, a '41 Wheat, and a tiny silver Scottie-dog post earring.

I also found a ring that looks too red to be copper or bronze, and not marked at all. Could be rose gold, but I'd expect it to be marked. It wasn't green either, as copper usually is. I might have to test this one.

It isn't much, but it's better than nothing.

Tomorrow is supposed to be a nice day, and all I have to do is decide where I'm going to hunt all day. I've got six sites that I want to get to if the weather holds, but we often have snow by this time of year. So I'm not overly hopeful about hitting them all before I have to call it quits 'til spring, because most will take multiple days to cover.

Looks like rose gold to me OLH:clapping:
lovely colour - 14 K is my guess
only a noble metal will stay clean like that after being in the ground

Last year i found a modern 22k earring unmarked so it still happens
congrats :thumbup::biggrin:
goodluck tomorrow :)

That is tiny , congratulations on finding some good stuff at a pounded site.

Nice find!! Congrats! It's supposed to be decent here also! I don't want to put the detector away either! Hopefully find some keepers! Good luck!

One of the gold rings I found this year has no markings because the band is wore down so bad and I had it tested an it's 14k so your ring may have had markings but are wore off.

I'm running in to frost in areas that are shaded by trees an buildings so I think this is my last week of MDing.

Nice recoveries! Interesting ring......any idea what the TID was on your X-TERRA? Regardless, let us know if it turns out to be rose gold. What coil were you using when you found that tiny silver ear ring post? HH Randy

Well, the answers to your questions are complex. Not tough, but need some explanation.
The coil used for the entre hunt was the 6" "Digger". It hit on that tiny earring like it was a silver dime! It wasn't very deep, but still...to blow my ears out like that was impressive.

Now to answer the rest is what gets a little weird. I've noticed that TID's are generally about 1 bin higher than I'm used to on high conductors. Copper pennies come in here @ 38 normally, and they are 40 with the Digger....no big deal. Zinc pennies are normally 32, but are anywhere from 32 to 36 and jumpy with the 6" LF. What gets strange is what happens to ID's below that. Low conductors seem to come in much higher than normal. That ring came in @ 30, which oddly enough is exactly what the only nickel that I've found with it came in at. Everything that rang up in the normal nickel range turned out to be wadded up foil or small bits of canslaw. Pulltabs can register anywhere from 20 to 40, depending on size, age, depth, and whether or not the tail has been folded to fill the open loop or not.

The real saving graces with this little coil are considerable, and need to be mentioned. The tones are excellent with regards to what they tell you about the quality of a target. It is a HOT coil, so coin targets hit very solidly. Broken, scratchy, soft, or inconsistant tones have been junk w/o exception every time that I've even thought them a possibillity. There is very little "iffy" to this coil.
And, it is a Godsend at iron smitten sites. I've found that running in Pattern mode with -8 and 48 notched out I experience very little iron falsing. You still pickup a few random beeps when you graze the edge of a disc'd object, but quickly you learn to recognize the difference between a coin hit and a brush peep.

Which brings me to the final part of my observation that I'll share here.
I said that this coil is hot....it's no exaggeration. This little puppy is smokin'! So much so that I've found that it works really well with the Sensitivity backed off a fair amount further than I usually will. Instead of running it as hot as you can stand, turn it down to a stable pleasant level. Cranking it up adversly effects GB, and as a direct result it messes with overall accuracy and TID stability. And along with turning it down....you need to slow down. I mean almost Explorer speed. This coil has already found copper coins @ 7"+, with the Sens @ <20, along side iron, with Tracking running between 23 and 38. But it needs time to be accurate, and this lightweight little coil is easy to swing too fast. Normal shoulder width sweeps should still take 2
