I went out hunting shortly after getting home,:not far from were I live and found a lead ball but I don't think its old it don't have the grey patina on it. Must have fell out of a hunter bag,.

The old ones have a white chalk like patina on them.

Once I figure how to post pictures on here I will post it, can u help me Mike?

I have dug a bunch in CW areas and here they are all grey, as are the minnies - almost like they were just made. And to contrast that when I hunted down in Louisiana the round balls and the minnies were all white , like you say. steve in so az

is this what you are talking about ? The 2 on the left I dug in a tot lot last week. The 3 on the right came from a Civil War fort. I dug 3-4 different sizes, Steve in so az

That's It Steve, thanks for the photo's.

I use Photobucket - online host that's free. Great site. You register, load your pics, take the formula for them and put it on this forum & thats it ! Steve

I would have said the ones on the left are modern and the others are old.

use a pic hosting site?

I'm not sure what I'm using on my Blackberry.

Hi. The 2 on the left are Civil War Era. The first 2 frm left to right are a little older around 1840 - 1850. That last one appears to be CLAY. If so it dates to 1780 - 1820's. Also the bullet on the bottom of the second group has been "CHEWED". Another words someone was biting it to cope with pain from either surgery back then or an illness. It is worth a premium. Here in Boston we get them "every" time we go out from the 1600's - 1850's. Weeven have a regular Market for them. The normal ones are worth about $3 , The clay ones are worth about $6 and the cherwed ones, regardless of composition, are worth up to $15 ok. I hope this helps. Ok, so we're weird here in Boston ok. !!!!!!! PEACE:RONB

Heck, We even collect Square Nails. !!!!!!!! :heh:

Super nice Steve!!:yikes:

Remember I live in Boston which was Union where you live in Az which was Confederate. Hence the Prices are higher here for Confederate Relics because they are scarce here. Also the same "may" be true for Union Relics where you live ok. I hope this helps. PEACE:RONB

A CSA buckle can be pricey it was just less made than the union was and if the soldier's name is engraved in the back of the buckles and you can trace it back to a military roaster it is like gold!
