Found the problem with my Se Pro today....

I attached my 4.5x7 coil today and all my previous problems with instability/false erratic readings have gone away. I then tried my stock Pro coil again and the machine went crazy. Safe to assume that I just have one of those few "bad" coils. Just thought I would give you an update as so many of you have helped me try to figure out my problem. I tested it today with my small coil and got consistent readings and stable operation for the first time since I bought the machine new a year ago. I wish I had tried a different coil sooner. At least I know what the problem is/was now and can hopefully get a replacement from Minelab as it clearly has been defective from day one. I'll let you know what Minelab says about it when I speak with them tomorrow. Thank you all for your help. HH -Marc

Hi Steve, thank you again for your help. I'll definitely keep you posted about what Minelab does/does not do for me. Its really stupid of me that I didn't think of questioning the machine earlier as I've had it for a year now but thats just the way the cookie crumbles sometime. Hopefully they will take care of me when they see that my coil/machine doesn't have a scratch on it. HH and thanks again. -Marc

Marc -- you are welcome.

Yeah, crap happens. You have a year of frustration behind you which stinks, but you should be good now. I'm just glad you'll get to see what the machine can do for you when it's working right. Did you send it in to them already? Because if not, you may not need to...they may just send you a coil, I don't know.

Steve

Glad to hear your problem was solved. Happy Hunting !! :detecting:

Thank you all. Steve, No, I didn't send it in yet. I am going camping at a really, really old site this weekend that guaranteed has never seen a detector before and so now that I realized that everything works with my other coil, I decided to wait to send it in until next week. Maybe I will just need to send in my coil but I also don't know if it might be smart to send everything in. I have heard a few people say that there have been more recent software update tweeks and maybe I can get mine updated while its in. I don't even know if its true that there are differences, and even so, if they would make any difference, but I will ask Jeff when I call him tomorrow. Thanks again for all your guys' help, hopefully I can post some interesting finds from this site that I can thank all of you for. Have a great weekend everyone and HH. -Marc

Have a great time at your "virgin" site -- I guess you are obviously going to use the other coil? Again, keep us posted on what Minelab does to fix your problem. Unless Jeff says there is a major update they can do to the machine, I think I'd just try to get them to send me a coil...sending your machine in could be a long delay (to get it back).

I'll be interested to see.

Best of luck on your hunt!

Steve

Thanks Steve, yeah I will be using my baby 4.5x7 coil. Do you, by any chance, have a coil that you recommend for my Se Pro? I was thinking of getting the 10x12 SEF as it seems a lot of people are having great results with those. I might over-night order one stat for the weekend but can't make up my mind which one. Thank you again and I will certainly keep you posted. -Marc

The 10X12 SEF is a great coil.

But I would be a little hesitant to drop money on a new coil until I knew for sure that it was'nt the detector that was causing the grief .. I think the 4.5 X 7 will serve you well until you get that replacement pro-coil ..

I had my Pro coil do the same thing as yours did Marc, sent it in for R or R to Minelab.
Got a call about a week later saying the coil was definately bad and that they did
not repair them...sorry. They shipped it back and I had to buy a new one....
Just my FYI to you. GL Gold Nuggets :wiggle:

Thanks Dave and Gold Nuggets. I really hope they won't make me buy a new one. If they do, it will make my decision of moving to a new company, or not, a very easy one. I simply won't accept it as I have been pulling my hair our for over a year. I am not an "entitled" person at all, I just feel that there are cases where things should be made right and I feel this would be one of those cases. Regardless, we will see what they say and I will let you know. Have a great weekend everyone and happy 4th of July. -Marc

Absolutely Marc. They owe you a new coil, no questions asked.

I have the 6x8 SEF coil, and I really like it. At some point, based on how much Bryce and others (McDave, for instance) like theirs, I may add the 10x12 SEF. If you are going to buy a coil, and since you have a smaller coil, that's the one I'd buy. But, again, ML owes you a coil...I want to see what they do for you...

Marc are you saying you waited over a year to try another coil on the Explorer?

Yeah I know Neil. Thing is, I was so upset every time I took the machine out that I quickly switched to my Excal and enjoyed my day. The Se Pro just stood around as a backup machine. Now I decided to use it more and give it a real try and so I was able to figure out what was wrong with it. The difference is probably in that before moving to Minnesota, from Florida, I never really needed to use my Se Pro because I was always beach hunting in the water. Now that I live in Minnesota, however, I find myself primarily land hunting and so the Se Pro has stopped being neglected in my closet. The Se Pro was an impulse-purchase during down-time of my excal when it went in to Minelab. After a few weeks of it being there, and no hope of getting it back soon, I bought the Se Pro so that I would have something to swing in the meantime. The results were miserable and my machine ended up coming back a few weeks later and so the Se Pro has been sitting on the sidelines since. Now that I finally need it, I took it out and decided to trouble-shoot what might be wrong with it. I know this all sounds strange but that's how it all went down, to be honest. I would have sent it in earlier but between graduating college and planning/moving to Minnesota, figuring out what was wrong with the detector took back seat. HH -Marc

What part of Minnesota? I live in Cook...about 100 miles north of Duluth.

Let me remind you that just because a smaller coil works doesnt mean the detector isnt on the fritz. Smaller coils can be ran much hotter and wont be affected by the same problems that affect a larger coil. You have had it a year so obviously you arent being affected by the summer dry soil EMI. Its pretty cheap PR and a darn shame to loose a customer. Especially when they can give goods away to clubs .... a good business move here ML.

Hi Dave, I live in Minneapolis but will be detecting all weekend in Pine River and on the Whitefish chain. Although you are a bit far from me, it would be great to meet you and hunt a few spots together sometime (even this weekend if you don't have plans and feel like camping).
Dew, I completely agree with you. I really don't understand Minelab's constant giveaways and then I hear so many stories of them not taking care of a customer. I was thinking about getting either an E-trac or a V3i. The outcome of my situation will make that decision for me. Its really ridiculous that it comes down to a $200 item, which isn't such a big deal. The cost to them is very low I'm sure. Well they haven't told me that they won't cover it so I can't say anything negative at this point, but I have been told by them that they "usually don't." We are currently at a "send it in and we will see" point. I also agree with your comment when you say that the small coil might just be masking the problem. I will send in my entire detector next week, thats probably the best idea. Thanks for your continued input guys and I wish you a happy 4th of July weekend. -Marc

Marc --

I, like you, don't want to say anything negative until we see how your situation is resolved. BUT...

Did you buy this detector new?

If you did, then WHAT is this garbage about Minelab telling you that they "usually don't" cover a bad coil? It would be under WARRANTY, for crying out loud, wouldn't it? Besides, a GOOD company would work with you EVEN IF your warranty had expired and it is obviously a manufacturing defect (as it appears to be in this case).

PLEASE keep us posted. I'm with you, my willingness to continue with Minelab units depends upon their customer service and repairs department -- as these units are NOT cheap. If your situation, and another one here on the forum, is resolved in a "proper" way, then KUDOS to Minelab, and they will retain my business. I'm watching with interest...

My experience with Minelab and the Pro Coil was very satisfying. I was having some problem (on my E-Trac) with inconsistent signals, I took the coil cover off and noticed cracks. I sent a picture of it to my dealer on Saturday late afternoon by e-mail. He called me and said he would contact Minelab on Monday, Wednesday I had my new coil all I had to do was put the old one in the box, attach the call tag they e-mailed and drop it off to UPS, it was as simple as that. Contact your dealer they should speed the process like mine did.

Have you removed the coil cover and cleaned the coil and cover? It is amazing how much crud gets under there and can cause falsing. I had a friend contact me complaining about all the falsing he was having with his E-Trac, I asked him when was the last time he cleaned the coil...reply never...he had his E-Trac 6 months, a simple cleaning and he was good to go, just like new.
