Anyone any idea of its purpose?

It has a clear stone in the front and elaborate work on the back. Photo 6 shows an envelope shape on the back of the stone? It may be 13th century

Interesting item. It almost looks like a seal matrix or similar device. Have you shown it to the local finds liaison officer or coroner? They are the best ones to identify the piece for you. Good luck.
