to the best of my knowledge the thingy looks like a lead seal for railroad cargo or a railroad mailbag seal. I found one a few years back and they are pretty cool. Where did it ring up?

The Indians and Wheat Cent cleaned up nicely and the Foreign Coin is an added bonus. I dug one like it 2 yrs. ago and I believe it was made out of something like Aluminum. Great finds and Good Luck and HH.
 
Chris that foreign coin is a German pfennig, not worth much in a sense, 100 of them to a German Mark but it's from the olden days from the time of Hitler's reign i read it says Deutscher Reich and the pfennigs today don't have that title.

My guess on the railroad thingy is that it is from the old New York Central Railroad -- but that's all it is, just a guess.
