Found this yesterday with my Garrett AT Max, I think it's a screw on earring.

I could be wrong but I don't think that's an earring.
 
Yes, it's an earring from back in the day.
& it does screw on.
Gotcha, I've never seen a earring backing like that. It almost looks handmade.
 
Screw on ear ring is correct. I know they were around in the 1950's and 60's. Don't know about before or how long after. I would think a quick google would give you some time frame info. After the screw on type came the clip on and then to pierced, I do believe. HH Jim tn
 
Wife just informed me it how it works. The thumbwheel tightens to the point it is comfortably held onto the ear lobe. I would guess piercing ultimately would be more secure but yes, popular in the 40-50s but still seen if cant pierce....
