Tom, what you have there is called a "Great Seal Button" and is early 1900's. I have found 3 of them. Once heck of a nice button, don't you think? You know you've found something cool even before you get the dirt off...BIG buttons.
 
Nice find. That design of button is still be use today by our military. No telling how long that one has been in the ground.
