I know the basics upon Dave Emery's PI is built and I think a form of disc and be done this way. Just how accurate it will be I can't say.
Now, this type of design requires a concentric or DD coil to work. So, the disc portion will not work with a mono coil.
On a different note, the TDI will allow one to separate out silver and copper objects and ignore or mostly ignore other signals. Reversing some techniques also allows one to detect low conductors and leave most iron junk. This low conductor has a down side since small pieces of tin cans fall in that range.
Ok, given the above info, I still think one can use a mono coil and distinguish ferrous from non ferrous with reasonably high reliably. Some recent tests I have done indicates this can be done. Now, I have to find time and energy to follow up on the idea. Just being able to distinguish ferrous from non ferrous will be a great asset since the delay function can help determine low conductors from high conductors.
So, will this or a different concept ever result in a discriminating PI, I think the answer is yes. Will it be as sophisticated as some of the TID VLF units? No, not at first, but with time I think it will come close.
Now, here is a real kicker. The recent tests I ran actually allowed me to distinguish large non ferrous from ferrous objects and this was done with a totally external setup. When time and energy permits, I will see if I can build the additional circuitry needed to see how well I can get this idea to work. I don't expect it to be perfect but I do think it can be quite usable.
So, getting back to your question, yes, I think a form of disc will be out in the near future.
