I think you ask a valid Question.
Some of the answers may have been inflammatory but not to me today.
Some of the answers were very good also.
BH1972 congrats on the new life changed a bad habit for a good one.
Dave asked good questions about our state and the places you are hunting. Some of those orchards may be a ways away though. You are near Tacoma right?
Would I still detect. Yes. However I am looking for old coins to begin with and the amount of clad I have dug isn't all that great. Not when you go thru the forums and see guys who have pulled $20 to $40 dollars clad in a day or a weekend. The clad I have dug tells me I am digging where people have lost money though. I didn't dig a bunch of valuable coins but I did hit a few. Hit 3 mercs 3 silver rosies 2 buffalos (1 is a 1914s) a V nickel and a small handfull of Wheats. So not to bad at all for my first summer of hunting.
Do you go into the other forums to discover other's tricks, tips and techniques? I have a BH Landstar I don't use hardly at all. I do almost all of my hunting with a Minelab Xterra 705. Don't blast me guys Please! My point here is that i spend time in several other forums for the experience and content the guys (and galls) post. You will find a lot of good stuff in the Garrett forum Posted by UncleWilley as to tips and technique.They are labeled as old articles.
Your city is old enough you should find some old stuff. One of the guys in the Exterra forum hunts curbs from time to time and has done well. You Know the area between the sidewalk and the curb which is usually grass or dirt. Use care though because some cities don't own that strip they only have right of way, ask permission. Look for those tear downs or old farm houses, or the guy landscaping his yard.

I think you people need to re-read my original post. In it I asked what effect hyper inflation would have on the hobby. If clad no longer had any value, what effect would this have on the hobby. I am compiling a list of places to go MDing where the likelihood of finding older coins (ones with intrinsic value) is greater.
Several days ago I went to an old hotel that used to be the home of one for the founders of a local community. The original house was built in the 1880s. I found about 45 coins, however they were all modern except for a 1943 S silver war nickel. Even the coins from the 1970s were down about2"- 3". It seems to me that as grass grows upward and then dies down, it covers the coins with perhaps 1/16" of new soil. In the forest I determined that the falling fir needles add about 1/8" per year to the soil. So on lawns around here, every 16 years put a coin down another inch. a coin from the 1920s would be down about 6" coins from the 1880s would be down about 8". I did get many deep signals but did not dig them because of the size crater it would require and I don't think my stepmother (the owner of the hotel) would appreciate me destroying the lawn. Do these depth figures coincide with the findings of others?

I did not mis read the post. I comented on the post and what I believe the post says. My answer is YES I would, and I gave my reason. In fact hyper inflation would likley drive me to hunt harder and more often, also in more diverse places. The biggest problem you would see is more people not asking permision. At that point I would likely melt my copper down for its value as a metal.

I've learned along time ago that it's easy to get offended,
usually though its a choice. I chose not to be offended by
anything anyone says. I've gotten good at this but as I've
gotten older I find its harder to practice.
Its really easy to read too much into some of the
things people say here. I didn't find the first few posts to
sound offensive at all, but thats just me. But when one calls
anothers comment garbage, that is pushing the envelope too far.
Still, I have a choice on what to do with it: get all worked up
and lose sleep over it, or just step aside and let the comment
fade into the eather.

.I do still hunt in all metal because ya won't miss anything-I found a gold ring with 14 diamonds once on a signal anybody else would have passed upI also hunt for relaxton and exercise as I have arthritus in both knees and shoulders plus nerve damage in arms.this hobby allows me to go out and enjoy the world that God put here for us and all it has to offer-detecting is not about getting rich or all the stuff ya find-those are extras just to help ya along the way and brighten up your day or to give as a gift to help brighten up thier day.the biggest problem in the world today is greed and you are at up with it ,now your mad because you've not found a pot of gold and want to take it out on other peoples hobby.this is a hobby -if ya want to get rich try finding a job and earning your fortune-quit blaming the world for your problems.

Just as a silver coin signal may turn out to be a rusty nail or deep aluminum "whatever", that iron or foil signal could turn out to be the gold ring Woodwizard found. So, Mark, I don't think you can say that any signal is obviously junk or something valuable for that matter. Until you dig it you don't know what it is.

Wasp, I think you are correct however where I go MDing I literally get HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of "hits" and if I dug them all, I would be arrested for destroying the 20 acre park. I have to pick and choose. I can't dig every signal. I think that is why most of the serious metal detectors have the ability to discriminate. The old BFO type did not give the user a choice.

Okay, I'm probably the odd one in this bunch but I am not a coinshooter. I hunt for relics at old home sites and logging camps. Would hyper inflation affect my hunting? Yes, if I could not afford batteries. If clad had zero value, would I dig it? Yes, if that were what I was hunting. I dig every target I find and I hunt in all metal mode 99% or more of the time. My junk to relic ratio is probably 20:1 or higher but that is okay. Most of the relics I find have little or no value cash wise anyway. I have found seven coins this year, all modern but I have also found lost logging areas, railroad lines, home sites and the like which are more valuable to me anyway.

In the west It takes Old home sites and other old gathering places. Granges are good, but I think are hammered. I did find a Buffalo and a "V". 1914 and 1899. Those were the only 2 coins in a 3 hr hunt. Nothing but nails otherwise..
