Gain settings for Joey coil and X12 coils

What has everyone found their optimal gain settings to be for these two coils? I just got the joey coil(used) and havent played around with it yet. The X12 I found it best to run the gain right at 4 or 5. This is for beach hunting, not sure if that would change for inland sites.
