Nice going. I am impressed. In many of past posts I wrote that the easy gold was gone from Ganes Creek. And it sure was for the weeks of mid July last year. You would not tell where you found that big one would you? Just got to be at the cobbles. Again congratulations. Also sounds like Ganes Creek will be open in 2008.

WTG GerryThat place is amazing how it can keep coughing up pieces like that and at the same time one can wonder for days without a piece and think it`s dried up
I did this last year but we still got to see some huge gold found,these cobble piles go for miles and they still hold monster gold,you can`t really see a good spot from bad there...the gold could be found anywhere from the runway to outside the cabins.The key is the right machine(probably a MXT)and lots of luck!I think it will still produce another 50+ ouncer sometime in the future.Nice Job Bud

Hi Gerry,
Good on you - great finds! Your big chunk looks to be from the same vein as my 6.85 oz "Ugly Nugget" found at Ganes Creek. Same brown almost agate material. There is an amazing variety of gold found at Ganes.

I guess you have answered the question about this being Ganes last year - Not! I wish for Doug and Cathy the sale had gone through but for detectorists it is good news.
You are spot on with your comments about Ganes "If you are a patient person who can take a few days of detecting and not find any gold and still smile? If you are the type of person who enjoys talking gold and being around others doing the same thing? If you want a chance at finding a Trophy Gold Nugget and do a Once in a Lifetime Trip to Alaska? Then I think you would enjoy Ganes. If you are the type of person who gets upset and quits easily? he kind of person who judges your success to the amount of gold you find and its worth? The kind of person who is there for only 1 reason (to find gold)? I suggest you to get into another hobby and don

I'll bet you cant wait to get the specific gravity test done on it.
You know,,,, You should have a contest on who can guess the total weight of gold in the specimen? Just a thought!

If I never get back to Alaska in the flesh, I will always have the wonderful memories of my trip to Moore Creek...whenever I want to go back, I just click on my Alaska Trip photo album and I take a quick trip in my mind....I can still hear that lonely wolf howling.....and see the grayling striking...and the sight of my first specie...

You know that my estimate was a WAG (wild ass guess). Now the question is "Where at the mine was that big nugget found." Was it near where you found your record big nuggett? Was it near where you found your second large nugget? Do you know where Gerry made his fine? Are either one of you going to tell? We are all full of envy.
You sure have to like hunting for gold in the rain to get most out of a full week up at Ganes Creek.

John...I found my first large nugget below the old machine shop across the small creek at the cobbles. My second big nugget was found up towards Spalding. Both of Gerrys nuggets came up stream towards Spalding. You know John, that we cannot tell the secret spot just to anyone. When they ran the dredge,the big ones kept clogging it up, so they threw them in a pile to go back and get them later.
