Gardner

I have two Gardners with what appears to be a raised dot in the base. I have seen this in Enfields but not Gardners. Anyone else have any of these? Thanks in advance for any info.

Yes. The Gardner base-cavity's "raised dot" (which is significantly larger than the one in an Enfield's base-cavity) was an attempt to prevent air bubbles (which can form during casting of the lead) from "centering" at the top of the cavity and causing the bullet's nose to be partly hollow - a condition which frequently resulted in a "blow-through" when the bulet got fired.

You're welcome. :)
