Garrett Ace 250 vs Minelab X Terra 705

In a perfect world your ID will be solid. But to say the 705 or any other brand or model can eliminate trash is false. If you get another target trash or good next to a coin your ID will jump some. Just for the fact that the 305 has less notches will make for a less jumpy ID. If your going for jewelry you will dig a ton of trash. Lot's of hunters don't like the 250 because of one thing or another. But what you have to keep in mind is it costs $212.00 The 250 is not perfect. But it can do a lot. The 250 as well as the Xterra's holds their value very well. Is the 705 better than the 250? You bet it is. But you would expect that at $699.00.
PS: You could keep the 250 and stick the sniper coil on it. This way you could have a great tot lot killer. This is one place the 250 shines.

Ok I was thinking of buying a extra coil for the X705 and there are so many to choose from, 9'' 3khz coil, 9'' 18.75khz, 5x10'' 18.75khz, 10x5 DD, 6'' (18.75 khz) DD. I think the first one or second comes with the detector, I'm not sure, not the best ever on coils. Anyways does anyone know what might be good or best for coin hunting? All of these coils are on Kellycodetectors.com under Minelab coils. If anyone knows, that would help alot for getting started:minelab:

Your best accessory coil will be a small one. Either of the 6 inch coils. I like the HF DD 6 incher. You may never take it off?

No I would buy the best coil for my tastes of hunting which is coin shooting so I would keep it on but I could buy a sniper coil for trashy places if they make one. But if they don't I'll just have to practice telling a good target between a bad. I do know that a coin gives out a nice smooth loud signal while trash gives a bouncey and low signal. Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm sure thats what it is. After reading the manual, it sounds like it would be quite easy to learn with the signals

get the 3khz if your a coin shooter, you have heard me say it on here a million times, I have not took it off since I got it, It is my secret weapon, that coil sniffs out silver in the iron, it rocks!!!!!!

Oh I say get the 10.5 DD 7.5 kHz coil. It's the best coil for finding silver and copper coins in the iron infested areas and it covers more ground in each swing. So far this year I have found 194 silver coins.

Now you have three different coils to choose from and each of us think our coil is the best. The problem is, you need to get the X-terra first and use it for a few months to find out what type of ground you have in your area to see if maybe a DD type coil or a concentric type coil would work best for your type of ground and for the type of places that you like to hunt.

I should have the detector soon so I'll just stick with the stock coil to see how it does in the soils around here. Don't forget too that I am in Georgia and have the Georgia clay and that stuff really slows you down in the process plus it drove my Ace 250 crazy. Like false targets every 5 ft and the mineralized ground also drove my detector so crazy I couldn't even hunt the property. I do have a large field and a 1836 church I still need to try out plus I haven't finished this one field. I have already scoped out some old houses built in the late 1700's and surviving till the early 1900's. So believe me I have alot of digging to do so I'll get my practice with the X705.

With the stock coil on the 250 you should run 4 to 5 bars of sensitivity. Less if you get falsing in your ground. No matter what machine your running you need to reduce the sens if you get a lot of falsing.

I'am not sure about the 705 but my x70 runs on 4 AA batteries , simply amazing considering all that it can do . I love mine .

Hello from Downunder,

I own both a Xterra 70 and an Ace 250.
I like both ...BUT the Xterra comes out when I get more serious.
The Ace is a great fun machine - and fantastic around metal structures in kids playgrounds...you can get in real close to the metal and pick up what others have left behind.
I consider it more of a beep and dig machine, though I know it does indicate somewhat what may down there.

The Xterra has more coil choices, 3 frequencies, I believe more sensitive, is better in wet beach sand and most importantly- better ground balance -with tracking.
Down here our ground is often very hot (mineralised) and because of this, in some places , I have found my Ace250 won't run too well - so the Xterra and a DD coil comes out.
Even the Xterra struggles in some places, especially our goldfields.

The differences can be distingished by the difference in their prices...you get what you pay for- as the old saying goes.
My Ace was also my first machine and I still use it for playgrounds ( I think you guys call them Totlots or similar) and I have great success with it.
Goes4ever had a good point...my Xterra broke down recently ( it would not turn on - Minelab fixed it on warranty within one week ) but I still could go detecting using my Ace.
I would keep both, also if a friend comes along with you, you can hunt together with your spare machine.
Regards and happy swinging.

Mineralized ground will push you towards a DD and mild ground will go good with a concentric (or so they say). Dick at Bowens Hideout tells me if you are GBed properly that either style will hit the goods. I do tend to prefer the DD coils though and when I get the MF DD I will have a better comparison.

Coil choice does depend on hunting style and locality to a degree, and what you "feel" most comfortable with. In my opinion the psychological factor is a big factor. If I "think" I hunt better with a concentric, then I hunt better with a concentric.

If you are interested, I've found that you can run the Ace fairly stable in some mineralised areas if you drop your sensitivity to 5 bars and knock out the bottom 3 notches of discrimination. One spot that it really shone through for me, was a couple of years ago when I was hunting in the park behind Burliegh Heads beach (Gold Coast). I tried the same thing with my X-terra 30, but no luck and my Explorer was constantly falsing too.
It doesn't like having waves crash over it though.

For my 2 cents worth....I'd get the X-70(a used one). I personally like the 70 better than the 705, but that's just me. I think the 705 is less "user-friendly', but again, that's just MY opinion. My 70 is awesome!!

Little hard to find a new X-70. But I just found one on another site new for $700 but I hunt for a long time and it happends to get dark so I might get the 705 that has a back light. The 705 is just a upgraded 70 for 2009 with a back light a maybe a few other add-ons

ACE 250 with opt 9 x 12 coil runs about as deep as you'd want to dig a coin or relic in Ga., which is what I heard you say you do. Kellyco has them. All-metal runs deeper in the Ace than the discrim modes. Decreasing Sens sometimes increases depth and will decrease chatter. Good coinshooter and decent relic machine. Outgrow the machine first. But then there's always Coin+.

There's always something better to be chasing. Better to stop and let the machine you got teach you what it can. But your success will depend both on your confidence in your machine and your skills with it. Whatever floats your boat if you have the money and interest to do it.

here is the deal, by the time you buy the ace and buy the BIGGER coil, you would have spent as much as just buying an x-305 or x-505 which will blow the coil right off an ace250

I've owned both the Ace 250 and the Minelab X-terra 70 and comparing the Ace to the X-70 is like comparing a Ford Pinto to a Chevy Corvette! I now own a 'New' X-terra 505 and it's a sweet machine! The X-terra's have a better balance and much easier to work with and the capabilities of the X-terra's over the Ace 250 is enomous. Once you go Minelab, you're not likely to switch back.

I swing the X-70 and 705 and the 10.5 DD 7.5kHz and the 5X10 DD 18.75kHz are my go to coils. I think this thread is a testimonial to the high opinions of the Minelab X-Terra line of detectors. I would not own any other brand of detectors. HH TomB
