Garrett GTA 1000 and Gold

Hi,
I'm relatively new to the forum and have some questions that, hopefully, someone will have an answer for. Seems there are more than just a few very knowledgeable folks on this board!
I have a Garrett GTA 1000 and was wondering if this detector can be set up to reasonably hunt for gold? I live in Louisiana but am planning on making a trip to the Dahlonega, Georgia area later this summer to do some sluicing and panning. I'd like to use my detector to hunt dry land but don't know if it will be capable. Perhaps a different coil would make it useable?
I was thinking of investing in a White's MXT as it has a prospecting mode and could also be used on the beaches here on the gulf coast. However, I could certainly save some money if I could make my GTA 1000 do the job.
Any input would be appreciated>
Thanks.

Gold is a metal. Your 1000 is a METAL detector. Its not the best for hunting because of the lack of a true all metal mode but if you go over the right size nuget at the right depth you've got it.

Thats funny, because my GTAX 1000 has a true All Metal Mode, that picks up the most tiny of objects.Which i use in high grass all the time to penetrate through it,so that im not loosing any detection depth.

I find my 1000 to be much more sensitive to small gold when I use the 4.5" coil... it will pick up small items that the larger coils can't 'see'.
Even so, the 1000 and sniper coil will only pick up a .235 diameter lead shot about 1.5" out in air testing, I'd expect about an inch in soil for a nugget that size.
Good luck!

If you have all metal and get it ground balanced correctly you should be able to pick up BB -sized nuggets at a couple of inches or so, depending on soil conditions. Try air testing it with a BB or same size lead shot.

Would a larger coil than the stock one give me added depth? If so, what coil should I look for that is compatible with my machine?
Thanks to all who have responded.

I got mine from Kellyco a little while back, they were on sale for around 70.00.
I also have the 4.5" sniper coil for my 1000. The 4.5 gets better target seperation, but the 5.5 gets really good depth; I'm pulling up coins and similar-sized targets from nearly 7" deep. Depth is comparable to the stock 8.5 coil with the 5.5.
Sensitivity to tiny targets is about the same when comparing the two smaller coils. I believe that the Ferrett would make a good nugget shooter, but I don't think that they are on sale any more.

I've been using a GTA 1000 with 'powermaster' circuitry for many years now, and more recently, a GTI 1500. My friend John Hyde has a 2500 and a 1250 and I'm kinda' curious...
The 1000 and 1250 SEEM like very similar machines and it's very interesting that you own both. How do they compare performance wise? I'm pretty fond of my battered old 1000, it's accounted for alot of great finds... I have 5 coils for it and for many applications, and depending on the coil, it often is a better choice than the newer 1500.
The 1000 was one of Garrett's top of the line models for many years, and I'm wondering how it compares to your 1250.
Happy Hunting All!

Hi old bud. How the heck are you? Where you been hiding? I can't keep track of all the 1000 series. If you don't have all metal mode on yours you can't. If you do punch up "all metal" on the menu and adjust it with the plus and minus buttons as you bob and tune.
Is that what you are using now? I lost track of all your detectors long ago. Have you been finding any goodies?
Bill

Hi Bill,
After reading your post earlier, I had to get the dust off my GTA-1000 and see if I had been missing something regarding GB. There is nothing to adjust on it.
You know me, I find entertainment in trying all sorts of units on the usual sites here. If there is nothing left to be found, you have to find a different unit to motivate yourself to get out there and look some more.
I think the gta can stay a week or so longer then its on the classifieds and time for something different. I kinda forgot I had it.
With fuel costs higher, I am not hitting the beaches much so finds are slim to non-existent. Maybe next week.

Yeah the instruction manuals at the Garrett web site lists three series of the 1000 and lists all metal as one of the modes but doesn't say which one has it and there are no instructions on how to set it or use it if one did have it. I don't know who wrote those instuctions. Think Garrett needs a technical writer. I think the first of the series had all metal. Can't remember.
The 1000 is a capable machine and you should find some goodies with it before the urge to trade hits you again. These gas prices are going to curtail a lot of hobbys. If it keeps up you'll see the car lots fill up with SUV's. Take care.

My GTA 1000 has all metal mode. It is labeled as an "Ultra." Not sure at what point in the development if the 1000 the Ultra was made to know whether it is one of the later or earlier ones.
Elson, if you're reading this, I'm in Slidell, Louisiana. While I haven't been out for a while, I usually go down to the beaches at Gulfport and Biloxi. I'd like to do some inland hunting but I've been too lazy to do the research on places to hunt.
I'm wanting to go to Georgia and contacted the Administrator at the GGPA site. He said that Georgia gold is generally too small for metal detection as the gold is much older than that out west. Western gold has not been weathered and reduced in size like Georgia gold. If I get to Georgia, though, I'm going to try using my detector anyway. I know that some nuggets are still being found there.

Do you have plus and minus switches on the face plate? These are the controls for adjusting all metal. Place the detector in all metal mode and as you bob the coil up and down press either the "plus" or "minus" button to attain the degree of balance you want. These switches act the same as a threshold dial on any other detector.
