Hi All I'm new to the forum and have been reading through the sites, all you guys sound like one big family, very enjoyable reading, to my inquiry I just purchased used a GTI 2000 and realize that time on my part will be needed to fully utilize the units capabilities, I have seen very Little information on this particular detector, how much different is it from the GTI 2500? Is it worth upgrading the chip and circuit board to the 2500 specs? I am still a novice when it comes to detecting but am a quick learner. Are there any local groups in Westchester County NY that I can perhaps detect with? and garner pointers and in-site into the detectors capabilities and proper usage. My ultimate goal and intention is searching beaches in the Caribbean for jewelry coins on both the sand and perhaps waist high water, I may also be interested in any local classes that May be offered if anyone has knowledge of any. Thanks for any in-site and looking forward to hearing from a few of you, Johnny O

The 2000 will serve you well as is. The 2500 is just a tweaked version of the 2000. Having it upgraded isn't cheap unless you feel you need the mineral chip. Here is my field test of the 2000 fromten years ago.

The GTI 2500 has a better chip in it which makes it work smother and quicker then the GTI 2000. The depth should be the same. The newer GTI 2500 has another newer chip in it to help it deal better with very high mineralized soil.

To upgrade? Call Melinda at 1-800-527-4011 and get a quote to update the electronic specs. I don't know how much you paid for the GTI 2000 or how much you plan on using it, but if you got it for a song and plan to get into the hobby quite seriously, I would consider the upgrade. Uncle Willy was one of the first to field test the GTI 2000 and was running a classroom here on the forum some years back. He has lots of information between his ears on this machine. :)

Yeah I don't remember the exact figures but the upgrade is a couple of hundred bucks or so and the new mineral chip is another forty plus shipping. So you're looking at $250 plus.

Hey Guys Thanks so much for the response, I paid $350 for it, I liked the features and have read both very good and very bad reviews, it would seem that the bad reviews were based on limited experience and knowledge on the users part, that said considering the learning curve involved I will be reaching out in the future for pointers and possibly getting together with a fellow GTI owner for an excursion or two, again thanks and am enjoying reading this forum, are there any other forums of recommendation? Johnny O

There is a bit of a learning curve with this machine. Learn it well, practice, practice, don't get frustrated, and it will treat you well. Start learning in coin mode ( and stay there until you're familiar with the machine ) and keep your sensitivity at about 6 or 6.5 and your threshold at a very faint hum. Scan slow as it doesn't respond well to rapid scanning. Scan with the coil at least an inch off the ground. Centering the target correctly when pinpointing is crucial with this detector for accurate readings. Go to the forum index at the top of the page and it will lead you to other forums on this site. Good luck.
