Garrett Infinium LS

I'm looking for an underwater PI detector, with ground balance, to use for small gold on salt water beaches and other mineralized ground. It will suppliment my Gold Bug 2. I currently have a Surf Pro II that I'll be replacing. Anyone have experence with the Garrett Infinium LS? I like the price at less than $1000. Other detectors you think I should consider?

I swing an Infinium & find that it's pretty sensitive to small, low conductive targets. It also goes deeper than i generally want to dig. A buddy of mine was using one up in Alaska & pulled out a whack of gold with his, nuggets both large & small. I had an MXT at the time and, while I did good, couldn't compete with his finds. I suppose a large enough nugget would sound off as a higher conductor, but none up there did. The nice part is that anyone hunting in deep, big iron trash can cruise right past chunks that the VLF units & the Minelabs (at least the SD2200d)will read as good targets. The ID isn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but better than a lot of other detectors (at least in highly mineralized soil). If I had the money I'd like to get the Goldscan 5, but I don't & I'm not sure how much of an improvement over the Infinium it is. I also hunt in streams/rivers, so a waterproof detector is very practical. ..Willy.

Hi Walt,
Sorry I'm unable to add anything useful towards answering your question but, I'm curious, "small gold on salt water beaches" is it jewellery, or small nuggets and pieces you're seeking?
We have a large number of beaches where there is often beach sands containing flourgold. I have this hunch that in a couple of places where cliffs of terminal moraine are being eroded, there should logically be small gold and nuggets being sorted and deposited by the currents along the coast.
Just wondering if this is in your experience?
Cheers
Kev.

I don't see any gain, if you hunt in water, you can get the waterproof headphones(maybe you already have!) and just set it down in the water to do any scooping or digging. The depth and ground balancing with the Infinium is highly underated I think, you do need to understand GB better than manual shows to avoid noise.

I'm looking for small nuggets, match head and smaller, on the beaches of Nome. Lots of metal trash as the city has washed away in storms a couple times. I also dive in Hawaii on vacation in the winter so I'd like an underwater detector for rings and such.

Hi Walt,
You might have a bit of trouble picking up those small pieces with a stock PI, sort of VLF domain really. For pieces that small, you might be best trying a Bug, or GMT in a watertight housing, such as a Pelican.
Here in NZ during the goldrush days there were a lot of ships that foundered and broke up resulting in total loss of ship, cargo, and persons. They were usually trying to cross river bars in storms or when the river was swollen, to get those fever driven miners quickly onto new discoveries, and taking other risks that no Master in his right mind would normally take, if it were not for the goldrush rush.
Check it out, I'm sure Nome will have some too! They had the fever no doubt. A lot of those early miners were carrying a considerable amount of gold coinage (ironic really). So if the ship broke up on the shore you will discover all sorts of paraphernalia, fittings, personal belongings etc.
If you didn't need ground balance, and were only going down 2 metres at most, Eric's Aquasearch is a mighty powerful machine.
Cheers Kev.

I have the Gold Bug 2 and have used a GMT. While they are good for small gold, with the high operating frequencys, they don't work well on salt water beaches. I have used an MXT as well which I understand is better on the salt but I found on non-beach light-medium mineralized ground the Bug 2 is an equal or better machine. I like to have a Pulse machine for my second detector. I want one with discrimination so I don't have to dig every beep as I do with my Surf PI.
Walt

The discrimination will lnot help you much. The sensitivity of your existing unit is the same, except you will lnot have the ground balance in gold areas like the Infinium. Don
