Figured that this is the place to find out if the Garrett disc. claims are true. Was reading an XL500 manual on their website & in it they claimed that it could disc. out iron! Can this be? I don't particularly care if depth is sacrificed 'cause it would mostly be a feature used on land & in a few inland lakes. These lakes I mentioned are so full of iron trash that hunting it with a regular PI is an incredible act of masochism. Not only are they trashy, but also LOADED with black sand.. enough to drive a VLF machine crazy. Has anyone given the Garrett a fair shake? Was also wondering about it's ability to find small gold. How good is it? Does anyone know how they achieve this much vaunted discrimination? Your help would really be appreciated. Thanks..Will.
 
lose not only depth [ what little it has ] but small gold too.Nope,a true discriminating pi is still in the future.You can work a cs7-umd to get a good idea, i've heard.If you dont care about depth, why wuld'nt you just use a vlf?
 
and the iron trash only extends abt. 10' into the water. Once past the trash, it can go to zero disc. There are also a few places up in the hills where I was lucky to get 4" with a VLF. Strange thing was that it was all sandy stuff. Was thinking that a PI would do the trick. In a number of these areas I was just looking for coins and couldn't get any depth, no matter how I ground balanced.
 
it does go deep in standard disc mode at zero disc..(2 and sometimes 3 scoops on items)Small gold rings that I found in the water with this zero disc setting were rejected in an air test with the disc set at `2`.Ive never used it in discrete disc mode so I cant say about that.But I can say that it `is`sensitive to small gold by what Ive found with it,small gold earings and small gold childrens rings.you can probably go on the garrett site and check out the operators manual and look for the graph that shows the aprox loss in depth due to the disc range it can be operated in.. Both Garrett & Kellyco claim it will disc. out some iron.. more at higher settings.

Got rid of it 'cause it lacked sensitivity to small targets & couldn't handle the ground mineralization.
 
but ive noticed that iron usually gives a sharp raspy sound where as other items sound somewhat different.This takes time to master .If you used a pi all the time you would get a handle on it and discriminate somewhat by sound..Ralph
 
Back in 1984, I think. Found it to be very stable and practically bulletproof.
One thing, though. The ringing sound it had for a threshold drove me crazy.
