GB tracking

I posed a question the other day about my difficulty GBing in a trashy area. A couple of folks suggested using tracking to set the GB, then turn it off.
My question now is, if you use tracking in an area that has trash every couple inches, won't it just balance pretty much to the trash and still leave it in a slightly 'unbalanced' state?

If you balance over trash then the answer is yes.

I've found that there is little downside to keeping the Tracking turned on when hunting those types of sites. Masking is going to be much more of an issue than GB, and the machine is capable of being 100 times faster and 10 times more accurate than you are when Tracking is turned ON.

If I thought that there would be enough clear space to let it track and get a good GB, I would let it. But there is so much stuff in there that its impossible, otherwise I would just use the auto feature.
I have gone to my neighbors house, built in 1895, and get the same thing. Basically too many signals, not enough open space to get a good GB.
I know that it was detected before, although I don't think thoroughly. I went in with my Tesoro and found 2 wheats. With the 705 I am only finding new stuff, but most are in the 4" range. Last night I concentrated on high 30s, low 40s signals that said they were deep. Iron at 5". I am starting to think this may be fill.
I am also wondering why every place I go lately has so many signals in AM that it makes it very hard to GB.
So, Old Longhair, you believe I should use tracking more? If you get a decent signal do you turn it off to get a good pinpoint?

I use it most of the time, especially in trash.
Coil size and configuration will be far more important in high trash density than micro-adjusted GB. And it sounds to me like you could really benefit from a smaller DD coil to help sort through the debris.

I'm saving for a smaller coil. In the meantime, just trying to get the most out of what I have.

Hey Bill, try finding the clean ground that is adjacent to or as close as possible to the site you are hunting. At least this should get you in the ballpark. I sometimes will GB on the edge of a farm field to get some clean ground before going into the actual trashy area. Also try turning the sensitivity down a bit when you GB, this sometimes helps, as you could be picking up some false signals or chatter (due to EMI, etc...) while trying to GB. I don't think it will be long before you are posting some great finds here! HH

Yeah, sometimes i would have to walk into a slightly wooded section as close as possible to GB.You simply can not do it without a clean spot.Small DD coil is the only way to go in those type sites.Bill, try what i do,keep moving out of the main trash zone. You do not have to be there. If the site is descent, there are nice items to be found around the perimeter. Then see how close you can get.If it gets tough, move back out of the trash zone for awhile.

I thought I had posted a responce to Scott earlier, but I don't know what happened to it.
There is no clean and trash zone. The entire area is a trash zone. Either that or something is wrong with my 705. I can not find a clean spot to GB. Seems as though I have the same issue in my neighbors yard and my yard.
I know I didn't have this problem when I first got the machine and took it up to the school. I haven't been there for a while, so I need to go up there this wkend and see how it acts.
I find it hard to believe there can be that much trash everywhere, but I was pulling up small bits of iron when digging iffy signals. So....

Sounds like something is up. You should be able to find a clear enough area somewhere. Look up how to do a factory reset. Try hovering your coil higher than the ground and see what happens. Crank the sensitivity way down and find a area. I know my father in laws place is horrible and it's all little chunks of aluminum scrap. Almost every tone is solid and sweet sounding. All sorts of weird shape crap. People!!! Good luck

Before leaving this morning, decided to do a factory reset. Went out in the yard and no more signals every couple of inches.
Went to the trashy area I've been hunting and was able to find clear areas to GB.
Thanks for the hint.

Wow, thanks for mentioning that, Baja! I had the same situation the other day at an old home site. Hundreds of pieces of aluminum and scrap, that had great 'dig me' signals. I started raising the coil a few inches, and was able discern them, but I still felt maybe those aluminum pieces were masking the 'real' coin signals. That situation just sucks.

Glad you got it worked out Bill!

Bill, will you tell me how you like the x-terra 705?.How is it compared to the Vaquero?.Do you still like the Vaquero now that you have the 705?.

Since getting the 705 I've only used the Vaquero once.
I am able to hunt in AM with the 705 and listen for the high tones as opposed to the Vaquero where AM is practically useless and listening for subtle tone changes is just too hard when in a trashy area.
I don't know yet how the 705 does depth wise. I do know how its working for me in the trash infested 'new freeway' site, and I like it.
I'm sure the Vaquero has its place, I'm just not sure if it will be at my place.
