getting a little discouraged

If its too trashy you NEED this 6in dd hf. I just went over a spot that I had gone over with stock gold pack coil and found a few coins and a copper ring that could easily been gold. You gotta slow down with the 6 inch and LISTEN.

that is all I use is HF 6" and 10.5". maybe LF would work better in trash? but like someone said maybe should stop in parks where there is nothing but canslaw and tops here.

If you really want to know what you're missing to masking, Google: detecting "Beneath the Mask"
(I can't post the link because he's not a site sponsor, and I'm in no way suggesting that anyone buy anything from him, but the article is eye-opening!)

When you discover how easily targets can be masked, it will make a believer in small DD coils out of you. It should also be a lesson on how important it is to go slow enough to hear everything.

Old Longhair, very good article. I have his DVD but it doesn't go into the detail that the article covers. This and any forum should promote the sharing of information that will help us understand some of the unknown variables of our hobby.

anyone seen a really good video they can share on here that would demonstrate some of these ideas with the Xterra. can it be on some of the videos that you see where one goes out for say an hour or so and pulls up coin after coin with the ease of one or no scoops of dirt and maybe one pulltab per 10 coins be the norm? Not far from some of the commercials for detectors where they make it look so easy. A nice realistic video showing the display numbers along with the sounds of different targets and recovery of those targets would be nice. I seem to be doing what they are only my results are way different(more like 10 pulltabs to one clad). The videos do offer a glimpse of hope when discouraged though my results differ.

Hey kneedet...If you want some easy pickings, try a few sand volley ball courts. Even in Jacksonville they produced the goods!

You may have read pull tab and rings ring in the same. Keep digging you'l find a ring
Good Luck

I got my 705 in February 2012 I believe. I hit my biggest payday June 15 2012. Myself and loosecannon were at the fairgrounds in Helena MT. I walked away with .23 cents. YUP that is the most I have found since getting the MD. I believe I am up to about .35 cents total now. But my problem is an hour here and 30 minutes there and and and and. Just not enough continuous time to remember how things are supposed to work. I think I would have been money ahead to recycle the can tabs. I cant believe they quit making those 20 years ago and have found tons of them still.

I have been in your same situation. I have a X-terra 705, a Gold bug Pro, and a GPX 5000, and all I have found is 77 cents with the 705 and a little over two pennyweight of nuggets in a year and a half. I have been told to keep at it, have positive thoughts, spend hundreds of hours swinging, and do a lot of research! The one thing out of all of that which has proved to be true is the research. Unless you are in a place where the "treasures" are, - be it gold, coins, jewelry, etc.- then your chances of finding anything decrease dramatically. You can still find things randomly in some places, but if you want to be consistent, do a lot of research before you go out to dig/swing. Good luck out there.
