Best advice I have to offer; see if you can hook up with a local detecting club and go hunting with them. NOTHING will help you learn quicker. The club will certainly have some veteran hunters that can help you determine if your detector is working properly or not.
And you will get the bonus of learning proper hunting and recovery techniques for the areas you hunt. And you can ask them a ton of questions. 
BTW, red clay has a bad reputation with detectorists. It is possible that your Ace 250 just doesn't have a chance in that particular kind of soil. If so, you can always look for other areas to hunt.
