Ghost signal?

I was reading up on the sunray X-1 and they mentioned this, "On a similar note, one of the things that can happen to deep targets with some detectors (its very common in BBS and FBS technology) is that the machine may loose the target altogether after you've dug 8" or more." They then mention how using the X-1 you can then go into the dug hole and explore further.

Here's my question, "Why/How would a BBS/FBS machine lose a target after digging 8" or more when it's still there?"

Is that because now you're basically doing an extreme air test from 8" or more?

With the BBS and the FBS detectors they need the ground to compare to anything else to get the depth. Both of these hates air and you now have a air gap between the target and the coil when you dig a plug. This also is why when you bury a coin and then try to go over it sometimes you may not get a reading on it even at 5 inches as there is air in it now, so you have to pack it down real tight and now you may be able to get a decent signal on it.
Another reason I feel is as you dig you can turn the coin on edge and at a deeper depth you will not get a signal at all. Since we been using the X-1 probes we find many plug that still have good signals only to find the coin deeper then the other person dug or to the side of the hole. I just had a signal today with my E-Trac and dug a plug and the signal was gone, turned on the X-1 and went into the hole only to get no signal either, but a very slight change when I used the probe in all metal pinpoint to the side of the hole. dug over about 4 inches and found a 1884 IH that was at a angle.
Other detector too other then the BBS and FBS also will lose a signal once a plug is dug if deep enough as I seen this with my Shadow X5 I had, good thing I used my UniProbe with the headphones or that 1894 O Barber dime would still be in the ground.

The funny thing is though that I have had some deep stuff and my SE never missed it. Only disc I use now is nails, everything else is wide open. I knew about disc out foil and you could lose some gold but when I read on what else you could lose disc out screw caps and crowncaps that was a wake up call so now it's wide open with the nails just disc out, listen to tones and double-check the screen.

If you did what I do with my X5 you can find it.
If I lose a signal with the X5 I sismply toggle to all metal and there it is.

No sooner did I say the ghost signal never happens to me, it did today. I was getting a really difficult signal so I decided to dig it and after getting down about 8" I swung the MD over the entry hole and nothing, no signal. I remembered what was said about BBS/FBS MD so I just stuck my probe in there and there was a penny at the bottom of the hole.

By the way yesterday as it was getting dark I was digging one last hole and I was wondering where my probe was and as I turned around there it was snapped in half at the probe's midsection. I stepped on it. I can't wait to get a Sunray. The one I have is not that helpful. To have one that can go 3-4" would be a godsend and save me digging time and speed everything up in the process. I have the money to get one now but I need the money for rent & security as I have to be out of here by 12/01. When I move in my new place is when I get my Excalibur & X-1.
