GO GREEN ! Stop Buying Gas!

Cute car, but I wouldn't want to be among several large trucks while driving the highways and Interstates....It would be a squashed bug in an accident and me, too! May God Bless! Amen! Ma Betty

practical use - too small to carry stuff, or many people, no protection of any kind, no get up & go when it's needed and looks like crap. steve in so az

about buying some horses and a buggy and becoming Amish! :lmfao:

There has been a few accidents up near this area (Clare County) that has had some auto/carriage accidents with the Amish. Even driving a horse and buggy can be dangerous.

As much as many Americans don't want to admit it, the day of the gas guzzlers is over! If we, as Americans, are every going to be free of foreign oil, we've got to accept the idea of electric vehicles. Actually I've had the opportunity to see the Smart-for-Two up close and, to be honest with you, it has more storage space than the Volkswagen Beetle. And you'd be amazed at how much get up and go this little car has. Hey folks - this little guy was designed for inter-state travel; not running from coast to coast in Cadillac comfort. For what it is and what it was intended to accomplish, it does it in style and I, for one, would be delighted to own one, if I could afford it. It's time that, we as Americans, start thinking 'Green' instead of 'Gulp'.

Have to admit that the idea of driving one of these scares the crap outta me...not to mention the fact that I haul precious cargo at all times :) I can't imagine the stuff that I haul around on a daily basis fitting, us being comfortable (7cents is 6'3), paying the insurance, etc. I'm a big fan on going as green as possible and reducing our carbon footprints, but I think we have to be realistic. Personally, I've never driven a big suv or truck...my current car averages 32 miles per gallon, insurance is cheap, we have enough room, etc. There are many sensible options out there that will provide more safety and cut down on gas consumption-and most importantly, provide a decent amount of security!

We all have different perspectives ~ don't we? Personally I haul very little of anything to haul but, if I do haul something, my truck satisfies my need just fine. I need enough space to be comfortable at my height (6'-1" ~ 225lbs.) and enough space to transport my detecting equipment or a few bags of groceries. I've owned several 'Sports Cars' in my younger years, so I find commuting in a 'Small Space' exhilarating and I love the idea of not buying gasoline every again! I have no desire whatsoever to support some foreign oil tycoon. And, as far as safety is concerned, this little gem has as much protection as most small cars on the road, in America, today. If it didn't, it wouldn't be allowed in the country. India has a small 4 seater mini-van that runs on nothing but compressed air and a rechargeable battery pack but doesn't posses the necessary protection to meet U.S. standards, so it won't be marketable here in the states in its present form. I'm all for safety but there are cases where our government has carried it too far running the cost of production up to the point that middle-to-low income people cannot afford a new car. Of course union wages ( I call it personal greed ) haven't help the situation either. The real estate industry ran amuke essentially, for the same reasons. I know because I worked in the industry for many, many years. The prices of home kept on going up and up and up, to the point, that the average young couple simply couldn't afford to buy a preowned home; let alone a new one. I kept on telling my brokers that one day this was going to come home to roost and sure enough it did, in our recent U.S. financial failure. I've been saying for years that the average new 2 bedroom home shouldn't cost any more than $59,900. As a retired building contractor, I can tell you straight out that I can build that home today and sell it for that price and make a reasonable profit. So what does that tell you about the industry? It goes back to the same two words; personal greed.

Anyway ... back to this fantastic little 'Smart for Two' automobile. It's a winner. Even Ford started out with the 'Model A'! My goodness people, if we buy these small cars, we'll see the dependence upon foreign oil dissipate to the point that prices for oil comes gets beyond personal greed. Just my personal thoughts. Oh ... for what it's worth, I love the little 'Mini-Cooper' sold by 'BMW'; one of the most safety conscience automobile production companies in the world today.

Yelp, the way I understand it the electric companies need oil, as well as using water, to generate electricity for us to use...they are already increasing my bills! But I could be wrong....for Ma reads articles and then forgets what most say about the subject!  May God Bless! Amen! Ma Betty

I agree, alternate fuels have there place. I live 5 miles from work and something along those lines is attractive. The problem for me is that 4 days a week I am not going to work and just the trip to church on Monday night would tax the batteries limits. The problem I see is that the majority of the US market either do not want this technology or can not afford it. I am a perfect example I drive an F150 for my daily driver and The newly acquired 69 bug is parked. In my defence the car belongs to my wife (she does not want me driving it) and is to be my daughters car in 4 years. My wife drives an Accord. My guess is that we are probably pretty average.

I do see a change coming, but I think it will be forced by economic issues and not just the price of gas, at that point the only affordable electric cars will be from China. The up side is that there is room for retro fitting existing autos. I see solutions but for every one there is a corresponding problem. I believe people will really need to change what it is they expect from a car. For me I will take my truck to the Honda most days, It rides better and sits taller and at an intersection, I am not pushed around by the guy in the lifted Chevy, of course I don't move when I am in the Honda or the Bug either, I tend to be an offensive driver.

SS,
I would be interested to see what the long term savings will be for you in terms of % and real world $. I do hope you keep us posted, like quarterly or something.

Jeff
