Going to be posting some more of my magazine articles to give you something to do this winter. That is if you want to read them

Always love a good read. Do you have anything on the 100 khz detectors? I'm having quite a blast with mine that I got at a garage sale. I didn't realize how much iron is in the ground. Already found 3 rings with mine-only one close to gold-it has aap on one side of the facet and the 10k on the other-but it looks a little worn like it couldn't be gold. Depth isn't anything like my Ace, but gosh is it hot on nickels. Also made me realize the importance of tight overlapping of the coil.

Oh yeah!:bouncy:Sounds good to me!:thumbup:Happy Hunting!:)

100 khz is hot on gold. What kind of tector is it - a Compass maybe? If it's a 70 something model it has a DD coil. I field tested a Compass Gold Scanner Pro a few years back for Steve Goss who was trying to hold the remnants of Compass together at the time. If I can find it I'll post it. It never made it into a magazine, instead Steve posted it on their web site which may or may not still be in existence.

Actually it's the Hay's Mark I which is, if I remember the ad, around 98 khz. It reminds and acts like the Compass I once had. Not only is it hot on gold, I've found nickels in my usual sites and the patina on them tells me they probably registered as something besides a nickel. I have a steel pin that holds a trailer hitch, shaped like the letter "R" and it doesn't really reject it or accept it-just keeps humming but will find a gold ring held in ANY position ANYWHERE near the pin. I've found MANY charms and trinkets, 3 rings-MAYBE one of them is gold-it's so tiny but I'm able to make out 10k-but it looks worn and has the letters AAP above it-so maybe not gold. Some of the coins had such a dark red patina on them, I'm sure they were probably masked from other detectors. I can see why one of your acquaintanances is whipping butt and taking names.

Yeah a Jefferson nickel is the test used to determine if a detector is hot on gold as they have nearly the same conductivity.. I remember that machine. I've got some mags somewhere with ads for them. Do they still sell them? I haven't seen or heard of them in awhile. Aren't they pretty simple and basic as far as features are concerned?

Yeah-I really think it's basically the same as the Coin Hustler by Compass.

Ya I'd like to read them.
Jeff

Yeah I've got a Hustler. That's what my wife used years ago before she got down with MS. A friend of mine had one in her garage just taking up space so I give her Twenty five bucks for it. It's still like new and a blast to use in tot lots. I owned Compass detectors for years when they were still in business.

Yes I like those articles. It's been two years going hard with the ACE and I've found wonderful things. Once in a while I get all big shouldered and think I'm all that. Then I read seasoned vet articles and it brings me crashing back to earth in a hurry. I realise again that I know little and have a lot to learn still. Which is another wonderful aspect of this hobby.
