Gold Chain, Stud and Ring Test

Barry NY

Member
Terry Soloman is an avid gold hunter and wanted to join us for a side by side test where he was able to tune in the gold machines.

Some people who own Fishers thought the Gold Bug II was the benchmark for micro gold jewelry on the beach but in my estimation it was the 3rd best today. There are many "experts" on forums that make claims about machines that are inaccurate so instead of debating, I would rather post the video so you can be the judge..

Its a little windy but the signals can still be heard..

Thanks again Terry for making the trip and providing your expertise; thank you Barry for extending the invitation to Terry. It was great seeing both of you guys today.

It's been interesting to watch this strange tale of braggadoccio unfold. This is my first comment on it, since I was having such a hard time taking it seriously.

I don't know what the Vaquero and/or DT Gold do or don't do.

Meanwhile, there's the GB2 which I do know a thing or two about. Designed specifically for gold prospecting with no other application whatsoever in mind. Of course being a gold machine, it's good at finding small metal of any kind, including small jewelry on the drier part of a beach, and a few people use it for that. The discriminator in the GB2 was designed specifically for goldfield use and is not designed for any other purpose. It can of course be used for other purposes.

So, if someone wants to claim that they've got a metal detector that discriminates better on a beach than the GB2, that's no skin off my nose. The obvious question is why anyone would go to this much trouble to pretend that it mattered? Res ipso loquitur.

It looks to me that the whole point of this video proves that the Gb2 may not be the best at finding small gold items full stop. The machines were tested in all metal as well and the Gb2 seemed to be the least sensitive machine. It does not really matter if the Gb2 was designed as a specialist gold field detector.....if it don't cut the mustard it aint worth havin.

Hello Dave,

Let me bring you in the loop and address a few things that seem to be bothering you enough for you to take the time and make a post wondering why I would go to the trouble of making a video that does not matter.

On other forums where there are "Fisher Experts

Hi,
Just a simple question :
What makes someone "a gold expert" ??
Is it because someone has found gold jewellery or is it because someone is looking for gold ??
I

I believe that Terry runs a gold detecting school in AZ (Terry Soloman...but I'll let him do his own explaining...
Let's not stray too far from the topic...please...thanks...

I would say that a gold expert is somebody who has made it their goal to become proficient at finding gold through much research, thorough use of the machines that are made for such a purpose and years of experience in this particular pursuit.Such a person would,i'm sure,be the ideal person to set up a machine for testing and for giving their opinion on such a machine.
As for the video, why not see it for what it is......it is simply a video that shows a real world test between 3 detectors which clearly shows that the gold bug is not as good as the other two machines. This may be slightly upsetting for owners of the gold bug but the video speaks for itself.Personally I would like to thank the people who take the time to make these videos as it gives potential purchasers of such machines a chance to see their performance in real world terms. The conclusion I take from this video is that if I were looking for a machine to pick up tiny gold items on the beach I would not be buying a gold bug....it's as simple as that.

I'm a little confused also. If we're talking micro gold jewelry and using all metal, I think the GMT and Gold Bug II would both out shine the Gold Bug Pro, Tesoro Vaq. and the DT Gold. Then there's the obvious issue of different sized coils being used in the test and nothing showing the Ground balancing of the machines. When the GBP is first tried, the threshold is set way toooooo loud. Anyone that says they nugget shoot with their detector set that way can't be very successful at it. Sorry, but that test was definitely comparing apples to oranges.

Have to chime in. First thing I saw and heard was the GB2 threshold. Way too high, who would ever run that high? We alway run threshold in all metal as low as possible, just so it is audible.
That way a very small or deep target will break thru the threshold. I could clearly hear the threshold change when going over the target with the GB2 that on the video was indicated they can't hear
and or would not be a dig-able target. Finally some one says turn the threshold down........indicates to me, some one doesn't really know how the GB2 operates or has any long time experience hunting with one.

One thing I noticed is the constant comparing and trying to prove the Deeptechs are better than any other machine out on the market. Reminds me of all the crap that went on a number of years ago 2005? when Magnum and the Mayor on the Tesoro Forum was carrying on about the Cibla and the Vaq...........................

The Vista Gold seems to be an awesome machine from the start almost bought a new one straight from Bulgaria, I don't live in the US.
Currently not so sure about its real field time hunting capabilities........decided not to get one. I have read all the forums, US, UK, Bulgarian, German, etc.
and have come away with the impression to look at some other VLF machine. Still would like to check one out if some one ever close by has one....

I watched the video with the intent of finding variables that could not be determined.
Variable #1- EMI present or not, all know EMI can reduce performance by a huge margin and at times it is not even noticeable.
The Vaquero uses a concentric coil and the signal is less affected by EMI.
If this test was done anywhere in the area of a military base, airport or radio tower where radio transmissions are taking place the GB II will suffer the most interference since it the highest frequency.
Variable #2 Nothing mentioned if the Vaquero had the frequency changed, I always loved that feature myself.
Nothing mentioned whether the DT was set to slow or fast recovery.

Variable #3 is this sandy area ever covered with salt water? Salt minerals can reduce performance on some machines.

Sure the DT might be a good machine, but more test need to be done before making a determination of performance.

All variables must be removed before a fair and unbiased review can be stated.
Good or bad.

As far as the variables, they are the same for all machines.tested. The sand is never covered by the salt water; we all know single frequency machines would have trouble with even damp salt water sand. We were on a beach with no power lines causing interference. All machines were able to run smoothly on maximum sensitivity.

The expert, Terry Soloman, has years of experience and actually teaches gold prospecting. The threshold for the GB II was loud and then immediately turned down by Terry. Check out www.terrysoloman.com

Watch the video again and you will hear the GB II and the Vaquero being ground balanced; not a difficult task considering it was neutral sand.......

Neil, very rational comment. Apparently not everyone sees the test for what it is..... almost like some are reaching for reasons...... oh well.

Sven, If showing results "proves" the DeepTech performs better in certain situations; so be it. All of the tests are very repeatable. I think the results speak for themselves.

Tom, apples to oranges? Coil size (GB II has a 10" elliptical and the DT Gold had an 11" elliptical) being a factor? I would have to agree with you when you said "I'm a little confused also". You said "If we're talking micro gold jewelry and using all metal, I think the GMT and Gold Bug II would both out shine the Gold Bug Pro, Tesoro Vaq. and the DT Gold.". In the video, the DT Gold not only did better in all metal, it gave a better signal while in discriminate being able to knock out a nail and still hear micro gold jewelry better than the GB II in all metal. I appreciate your thoughts regarding the GB II being able to out shine the DT Gold, but I'll revert to the video..

My mistake. I was thinking you were testing the Gold Bug Pro not the Gold Bug II. Question for Terry. Which of the three detectors would you pick for nugget shooting?

I'm still open to checking out a Vista Gold, does appear to be a impressive machine overall.......
It would be more of a niche machine for me from what I am reading.
If anyone ever purchases one in WNY, wouldn't mind checking it out when visiting my parents.
