I just got a V3i today! I went to go detect the property of some family members and a friend of the family was there by chance and told me about a cache of gold coins that were never found after the owner passed away. It sounds too good to be true but this is a very old lady that told a long story about this cache. I know the general location but what would a good program be for locating this cache? I think there would be a lot of trash around so what can I do to search for a tin of gold coins? If it is in a tin can will that get discriminated out and I would miss it? I don't want to dig everything.... Maybe some setting for size of target? Any ideas?

I would be looking for overload signals if the cache is of any size at all.

Hi JV--

Welcome to the Forum.

It sounds like you are going to have some fun! My strategy would be to first look at the area and identify likely landmarks such as trees, fence posts, large stones, etc. that would make recovery easy for the depositor of the cache. Second, I would set the discrimination on my V3i to accept from -31 to +95 and turn on VCO to be able to trace the size of targets and I probably WOULD dig all targets. Third, I would swing the coil very slow and overlap my swings. With this basic strategy I would be confident that if the cache IS there it wont be for long!

At the price of gold I would be digging everything. I would be using all metal. Do you think you are looking for gold or a tin box? Hmm
 
All metal - watch for overload-wrap around-large profile targets - keep diggin' till ya find it!! gl and hh
 
I had the opportunity to detect the yard of a house built in 1840 a few years back. The owner had not lived there long but she told me that the previous owner told her that there was a gold bar buried in the yard somewhere, along with a Luger. She was told that she could keep the gold bar, but wanted the Luger should it ever be found.

It was the first outing with my DFX and I only found some wheaties. I really should re-contact the woman now that I have a bit more experience.
 
I got REALLY excited yesterday. I was searching this possible gold cache area and I went on top of a huge half log that was burried pretty deep and got a +85 solid hit on it. Something was definitely underneath this huge split log that was half buried. After about 20 minutes of digging around the log I finally managed to flip it over with some help from my wife. Underneath was a gray plastic bag. My wife thought it might have a dead body in it and got scared. I pulled out the bag and inside was this pellet gun. Not the cache I was looking for but it was kind of neat. It seemed like I was digging trash all day yesterday. I ended up with about $1.25 in change and I found another log I got a good reading from but I couldn't flip it over. I would either have to dig under it for hours or get a fork lift or something. Lots of people illegally camping in the area so there is too much trash. Any tips on how to search a trashy area for gold coins?

Put a dime on the surface and see what reading you get. Now put them in a metal box and take a reading. Now take a reading of just the box. I don't think you can read the dime in the box and you can't read the gold in a box. You will read a box. What would a box read like, big trash.
 
The pellet gun you found under one log was hidden so possible
the other log may be hidding the other treasure.
It will be hard to move perhaps because he didn't want any one
to find what was under neat:unsure:
 
In the old days I was told they would put that kinda stuff in the back yard to be able to see it out the window,. I can come help for twenty five %..LOL
 
Like blind squirrell said look at the landmarks like old trees, stones , posts, corners of house or out buildings, crawl spaces, even ask if there has been old trees or buildings removed from the property that used to be there, odd uneven places in the landscape, gardens, etc.... I have read and studied many treasure hunting books and techniques and always try to apply them to my hunts. Covering these areas will greatly increase your odds even though its still alot of places to cover but its not like getting there and thinking to yourself (hmmmm where should I start) because think about it back in the day when technology was minimal and the only thing you had to remember where you hid something was your" ole noggin or that steel trap in your head" and of course some chose to write it down which wasnt likely because then you had to remember where you hid your map....lol So, if it is still there Im pretty sure they would have used a landmark. Good luck and my fee for all of these priceless treasure hunting tips is one of the gold coins when you find them...lol just kidding... but seriously DIG ALL TARGETS in these areas regardless of how tired you get, you have a rare opportunity
