I was just wondering,if anyone has ever found any gold coins ,,,,,,,,,and if so ,would they post them,,,,,,,,,,,,i have found lots of gold ,but no coins ..ill keep looking .....thanks forum

Finding gold coins is extremely difficult as not many lost and from a one dollar to a 20 dollar coin can cover from foil to dime on your meter so many are just plain gone over without digging..Good luck in your quest and over the years only know of two being found in our area which has many competent detectorists..

Here's my 11 gold coins:

oops, n/t

That is awesome Tom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dang Tom..............realy realy nice ,...........Did you dig everything to find them? How Deep? Ill find one of those pretty things one of these days.............Again realy nice .thanks for the pics,

This pretty lil 1908 2.5 Dol gold coin found 7 inches down laying against a rotted iron piece of crud comes up three different ways depending on how it faces my EX II. Face up 7 10, On side 6 19, Obverse up 8 11. I don't use the digital screen much but I have found many gold rings and watch for that pattern and listen to the nice sound. The sound is consistent in ferrous with little variation unlike the digital readout. Yes that is a cufflink attached to the back right over the eagle. I don't mind more gold for me. I have Also found a 5 Dol gold 1899. The only coin I found in a hard hit avenues yard but that's another story. Id like to post it but I don't keep it here. Nice gleam to it eh?

No, didn't necessarily "dig everything". Depended on the type site I was at. I certainly wasn't digging iron, for example. I may have passed some flittier sound low foil, etc....

With the exception of one, they were all found in relicky (stage stop, old ruins/camps, etc...), old town demolition, and beach erosion storms. So yes, in all those cases, I was digging all, except iron. But the one that was dug in a park, I was being selective, and perhaps passing foil, tabs, etc.... Another one (a $5) was dug when they were demolishing some rodeo grand stands. And since there was an ocean of pulltabs, we were strictly going for the silver (no one was going to be a hero and angle for nickels, since time was short, and fill-dirt was coming). But the reason a $5 squeeked through, is that it reads slightly higher than a square tab :) :) :)

Thanks for the the post Tom, You have some realy nice coins.,, I hope to find one , but i guess everyone does,LOL,,Any way i dig most all foil and pull tab, signals.and have been very lucky in finding gold rings..so hopefully ill find a gold coin, thanks again for your post ,Ilove looking at the coins , David

I do not post much so please bear with me. I have found three gold coins(1$, 2 1/2$ and a 5$) in the last three years. All were found because of research....I think.

If you look at where Tom found most of his you will see a pattern; no schools, neighborhood parks or churches. IMHO you need to hunt where there was a REASON to carry gold in that era.

I found a book about my town in the Hist. Soc.. It was titled '1849-1949'. One chapter was about recreation at the turn of the century. It said "After the Fourth of July parade the WHOLE town would go to picnic and celebrate at the 'Grove by the River.'" More research at my local paper told about Foot-racing, pitching horse-shoes, arm wrestling, horse racing on an improvised track and the occasional fist fight. It was also told that the most successful business in this logging/farming area was....a distillery, 12,000 dollars A MONTH. Now.....there was no TV or Radio sports games, Computers, Four-wheeling or much other....'Man-things' to do in that day and age. There was, however, GAMBLING and...boys will be boys. This gave a reason to bring gold to these holiday celebrations.....Snockered guys betting on the atheletes and horses of the day. I used old and new map overlays to find the correct spot.

This got me thinking. I researched 'Local Race Tracks' turn of the century and before. One excerpt said, ' The racers would pull their silkies with sleek coated horses, out of town to the track on the River Road. The drivers were dressed in their finest racing attire so as to impress the ladies who watched with hearts beating.' ......Guess what? It was not that hard to find; old and new map overlays and I was there.

I found the 1$ and 2 1/2$ at the 'Grove by the River', which is now part of a big City Park and the 5$ at the 'Race Track on the River Road' that is no longer a track, on the back side of a current farm field.

It is not hard to figure that when the daily wage was one to three dollars a day, a twenty dollar gold piece was a hard week or...months pay, not something you carried around for standard pocket-money. But.....guys drinking and gambling AND dropping/loseing a coin or two had a reason to carry gold. Hunt where there was a REASON to carry gold.

Hope this helps.

Bud
