gold coins

Well-known member
Just curious, does anyone now what the TID would be on a gold US coin, using the f75.say a 10 or 20 dollar.I dont have access to one and the local pawn shop for some odd reason wont loan me one LOL...hh rick in mi.

It would be great if it has a signal/tid number that is seldom seen, even if Fisher assigned it a 45 or something, and all sorts of bells and whistles went of on this special signal.
If a person did some research to determine the most common denomination minted and/or lost, it would be an idea for them to install on future detectors. The "find of a lifetime" feature.
It would be awful knowing a person just swept on by thinking trash...

20 will be fairly high..........up in silver coin area ...........Guy brought one to a meeting and we were all surprised where it rang in... Of course that's if the GC was a real coin..
he had.. ??????????????????????? It was supposed to have been real.

I believe there have been some gold coin tests done and at least one as I recall was posted on the Tom D (Nasa Tom's) forum. I think I remember seeing that the half eagle, $5.00 one, is the most commonly found and probably lost. The smaller denominations I believe come in in the foil range. I've been digging a good many of the low tid readings as well as about anything that locks on and sounds good on the woods spot I've been hunting as it is definitely right for harboring a gold coin or two. Just thinking about the possibility of finding a gold coin makes me want to get back out and do some more swinging. LOL HH jim tn

My old Teknetics 8500 has the Gold coins scaled off, (I never found any gold coins with it, but the scale for regular coins is pretty much right on)
Here you go,

$1.00 = high foil to near mid range of the US nickle.
$2.50 = high nickle to mid pull-tabs range (beaver tail)
$5.00 = mid pull tabs to lower screw caps.
$10.00 = upper screw caps just short of the copper one cent range. (this means right there with a zinc penny)
$20.00 = copper cent range.

Thanx for the replys guys, mark am saving your numbers for future refrence till i get my hands on a real gold coin? If that ever happens I will do a test with the LTD and see what gives.I know somewhere I read a post on a gold coin find with the F75 but cant remember where, was kinda hoping Cal Cobra would chime in cause I think he was on the forum as well.Till then Jim its up to you to find one and let us know!! come on you can do it haha.....hh rick in mi.

Note for new detector: rig confetti cannons and fireworks to the id system for when someone comes across a $20 gold piece.

Rick I saw your post and dug out some coins. The $20 dollar gold coin rings in at 70 on my F5 and 82 on the Gold Bug. I am pretty sure the F5 Tids are close to the F75 and the GB should be close to the omega and the T2. I will post for other gold coins when I get a chance. The 1864 2 cent I got last weekend was 60 on the F5 and 77 on the Gold Bug. I did find the 2 cent with the Gold Bug along with bullets and some rivets and the like at an old house site.

Take care
Bob

Thanx a ton Bob,I tried to keep this thread alive hopeing some one would know.I had a gold bug 2.9 and yes the tid's where very close to my f75.Thats quite a spread between the gold bug and the f5 though so am thinking maybe the gold bug would be closer to the f75 my bug hit quarters at 80 and my f75@83 under good conditions. But then again IH'S hit a solid 60 on the f75 the same as your 2 cent with the f5.....hhhmmm thanx again am looking forward for the rest of the results...hh rick in mi.

On my f75 LTD a one dollar 1852 gold coin registers at 27 on the machine. i found this back in the fall of 2010 with mt MXT it registered at a vdi of 12/ foil/ ring. It is approxiamately one half inch diameter, I had the discrimination set to just eliminate nails, The only reason I dug the signal was because I thought it might be an old button. Anyway it was not a very good signal and with the stuff you guys find I am sure that its possible to find in your future digs. Good Luck. Ezra.

Thank you very much that helps. I guess I should pay more attention to those lower tones ..hh rick in mi

Oh and let me say that is one heck of a find arnt to many can say they found a gold coin .you are 1 of a few ..hh rick in mi

Thanks Rick, The one coin book shows that the years of 1851 1852 and 1853 they made roughly 9 million of those little babies and I would think they would be very easy to loose because of the size. I just happen to get really lucky on that coin. I run my 75 LTD with only number 7 on the discrimination and dig anything but iron, i really do not want to miss out on a chance to get lucky again or miss out on old buttons. I think there out there and I am guessing these 75LTD s should hit the gold coins pretty well and everybody has a good shot at finding some gold coins. Good Luck, Ezra.

For finding a gold coin, ezra, I believe you pretty much summed it up. Low disc and dig everything above iron. Great find on your gold coin. HH jim tn

Doing a little drawer cleaning and came across a list of gold coin air test vdi numbers did by NASA Tom with the F 75 some time ago. They are as follows.
$1.00-------26
$2 1/2------41
$5.00-------52
$10.00-----61
$20.00-----69

Now, lets all go out and find one, or two. HH jim tn

Thanks Jim, for the numbers . with that site you have I think you need to memorize those numbers, Good Luck, Ezra.

Hey jim good looking out.You gave me quite a start when I first started to read your post I thought maybe you found a couple of gold coins in one of those drawers LOL.I will for sure take note of these numbers,as I seldomly dig anything in the 40's.And I find it interesting the $20 hits that high.Good day and thanks for the input, even if it did cost you some time to do some cleaning haha...hh rick in mi.

People have collected them everywhere, and then immediately put them away for safe keeping.

One of the reasons their so hard to find...

You are right, ezra, and I am digging just about everything from the 20's up. Lots more trash then good targets, I will tell you that. LOL HH jim tn
